About
More than a museum, ChocoMuseo is also an artisanal chocolate factory where we make our own chocolate from the beans to the bars with selected Dominican organic cacao. The visit of the chocolate factory and museum is totally free and we offer a free tour to teach you about the history of cacao and chocolate, the cacao tree in the nature and how cacao is transformed into chocolate. It is also a place where our visitors can participate into chocolate workshops where they have the possibility to elaborate their own chocolate from the cacao beans. You can choose the type of the workshop to participate. The workshop "FROM COCOA BEAN TO CHOCOLATE BAR" lasts 2 hours. Participant will find how to prepare handmade chocolate and learn all the steps from the harvest of the cacao in a plantation to the obtention of a chocolate bar. From the cacao beans you will roast them, peel them, and grind them into a paste. This cacao paste is used to prepare the first known cacao drink (invented by the Mayas), the traditional chocolate. In the end, from refined chocolate you will prepare your own chocolate bonbons with topping on your taste that you can take back home. Mini-workshop "UNIQUE CHOCOLATE BONBONS", 35 minutes. During this mini-workshop you will prepare the set of super chocolate bonbons using white, black and milk chocolate. Different molds and different toppings will help to create a set of unique handmade organic chocolate bonbons. Book the time of your workshop by phone or via our web-site.

All of the employees were helpful and were patient explaining the processes of each experience. Once you arrive at the location, the tour takes axp 2 hours. We enjoyed tasting rum and chocolate. We were offered cigars, but declined. I would definitely recommend this tour. It was only $5! You could buy items or not, that was your choice.

Went today with my 11 year old son--both of us love to cook and try new foods. We both agreed that our 2 hour lesson was the highlight of our 5 day trip here. What a great time we had with Francisco Alberto as our instructor. They picked us up at our hotel, we took raw cocoa beans and made all kinds of great treats. They gave my son an extra special treat. And, we did buy some stuff though it wasn't too pricey. Didn't have time to check out the rum or cigar shop but the coffee place was good too. Very cool. It was $35/epice

Thank you for your review! We are really happy that you chose our "Bean to Bar" workshop and liked it as much as we like organizing it for you! Our mission is actually to promote Dominican cacao and chocolate. That is why we offer free tours explaining the history of cacao and the process of making chocolate, but it's the workshop that let's you truly feel yourself a true cholocatier and invent your own recipes of chocolate bonbons.
We are delighted that you appreciated our efforts and hope you share our believe that ‘’Anything is good if it's made of chocolate’’!

We were so excited to visit the chocolate museum. However, when we got to the store in Punta Cana there were no chocolate tours. No make your own chocolate bars. No nothing. It was strictly a store selling Dominican chocolate. $10.00 USD for one chocolate bar…. Our daughter was SO disappointed. Souvenirs are very overpriced and very cheap quality. Do not waste your time, or money. It is strictly aimed at tourists…. Beware.

My wife and I visited ChocoMuseo and paid $70 for both of us to do the chocolate-making tour on May 26, 2014. It's a long review for a chocolate-making tour, but it was a strange experience for us. Overall the trip had its highs and lows.
First, we booked on Saturday morning to be picked up at 12:50PM on Monday in the Dreams Punta Cana resort lobby. We got to the lobby at about 12:40PM and waited for close to an hour and a half to get picked up. No one showed up. We booked the trip with our Apple Vacations rep, so we wanted to check in with them at about 1:15-1:30 to find out what the problem was, but unfortunately they take a 3-hour lunch break everyday between 12:00 and 3:00. Luckily, our rep came back early around 2:00, he immediately called ChocoMuseo, and we found out the driver was waiting for us at one of the OTHER Dreams resorts in Punta Cana. So at around 3:00 we were finally on the road. Not a great start, but we wouldn't let it ruin our day.
We were greeted at ChocoMuseo by our tour guide. I don't remember his name, but he told us that he was the manager there and would be our "Chocolate Master" for the tour. It was about a 2-3 hour tour and I'd say the first 75% of it was great. We had some shots of mamajuana (if you don't know what it is, look it up) as a "honeymoon special," drank some chocolate tea, roasted/crushed/ground cocoa beans and cooked them into delicious hot chocolate, and then were able to pour our very own chocolate into molds with whetever toppings we wanted. Our guide was friendly, very knowledgeable, and made us feel like VIPs this entire time. Visiting ChocoMuseo is free, but we were the only ones there at the time who had paid for the tour.
Now for the bitter part. While we were waiting for our chocolate molds to cool, the guide showed us all of the products that they made, including a 2.5-liter bottle of mamajuana. He asked how much I thought the bottle was worth. I threw out a number of $50. Wrong, it's $82. But then he said that tomorrow was his birthday and during his birthday week the US Manager let him sell mamajuana for whatever he wanted. The interesting part was that earlier in the tour he had specifically told us that his birthday was December 11. I called him out on that fact and he seemed angry that I remembered it and told me he was joking about the earlier date. He asked how much I would like to buy the mamajuana for and I replied that we didn't really want it but would be glad to buy plenty of other chocolate/gifts for our family. Nope. He pushed again, so I said $30. At that point he stared me straight in the eyes for a good 5 seconds and then turned to my wife and proceeded to really pressure her into giving him a number, all the time saying "no pressure." But the friendly tone in his voice was long gone. Finally, I stepped in and said we didn't want it, but would be happy to buy the smaller 0.5-liter bottle. He handed me a shopping basket, put the small bottle in the basket, and walked away from us. When our chocolate molds had finally cooled about 10-15 minutes later, he called us over, dumped the chocolates on the table with two small bottles to fill up , and again walked away without so much as another word to us. I understand it may be normal to barter in the Dominican, but we never intended on buying mamajuana and offered to buy plenty of other things, even after we were blatantly lied to about the birthday thing (which I know isn't a huge deal but just rubbed me the wrong way). We ended up still buying over $50 worth of chocolate/gifts but not the mamajuana. It was all very strange and very rude especially considering the shop was filled with people who did not pay for the tour, had sampled almost as much chocolate as we had for free, and were not being pressured at all into buying anything.
I would give ChocoMuseo a 2-star review no matter what, but still want to point out the following: the next night my wife got very sick, and three nights later I got very sick. The doctor at the resort said it was most likely a parasite from drinking the water and could have definitely come from our excursion. The only difference between us and anyone at the resort we met who didn't get sick was this excursion. They made us hot chocolate and the water wasn't boiled thoroughly, but we didn't see whether it was tap water or bottled water. Our guide also said that the day of our tour was his first day back after a 22-day vacation and then 1 day of being sick. He did not wear gloves for any of our tour. Our sickness could have come from anywhere, and I don't want to say it was 100% a result of the tour so I'm not basing my review off of it, but just be careful and observant if you do decide to check this place out.
And to be honest, I didn't really like the taste of this chocolate anyway.

Updating from original review which is below.
I loved the samples and bought a few $7 bars to bring home some small bite size ones to give out. Got home and gave out bit-size ones and people weren't impressed. I tried one and tried the bars and they didn't taste anywhere near as good as the ones in store. So the chocolate you purchase may not be same as what they let you try.
Original review:
Upon entering we received a delicious cup of cocoa tea before the tour of how chocolate is made. We got a tasting of various chocolate samples and other products like liquor, spreads, and even products made with chocolate like aloe lotion. The chocolate tasted incredible, but at $7 a chocolate bar, it wasn't affordable.
Nice thing is after you've visited the cigar and rum factory and bought items, they would let you store your bags behind the counter and gave you a ticket to pick them up when you left.

We took our 1 year old and our 5 year old. The guy who gave us the tour was the best ever! He was amazing, spoke 5 languages and was so happy. His English and humour was excellent. He took pictures for us and even convinced me to load up on the MamaJuana (not that I needed much convincing) Amazing, fun and tasty excursion. We had a blast. I have a ton of amazing photos.

We toured this "factory" as part of a "free shopping excursion". It's a waste of time. You see a few people rolling cigars and then they show you their souvenier shop. Then the chocolate tour was interesting but not worth wasting my day. When we were dropped off they guy said he'd be back in 2 hrs. We were done in 45 minutes. We had to sit and wait for 1hr and 20 min. 30 min of that we watched our driver sit and wait to take us back.

Very nice tour that is ran in groups consistently as I stopped to utilize the restroom my group had moved on. The one stop tour will explain how to make cigars and then the natural stone that is blue turned into various jewelry items. The rum tasting was good as you go on the tour. The vanilla is what I went there for! The vanilla is so pure and real so I stock up on mamajuana and vanilla its great for your health. Cacao Tea was something I taste and it was not bad. The chocolate was so soft and fresh! This was a great tour!!
