Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people. Dominican residents, tourists and working artists, flock to this magically inspirational locale.

To get a roundtrip ticket for the shuttle to go to Altos de Chavon go through the gate and to the right to the little building in the corner, there you can get roundtrip trip ticket to go to downtown La Romana for $5.00 per person roundtrip or to Altos... There's a lot of history here to be seen it's a 15 minute bus ride from the ship and well worth the time, you step back into time once you arrive.

We booked a catamaran trip to Altos de Chavon and Isla Saona through Trip Advisor on Viator with a company called Caribbean Route. We were informed via email, the day before, that Altos de Chavon was closed for a private event and we'd be stopping at a natural pool instead. Ok, we thought. Things happen, but then the other couples... More

This tour was very informative and really gave us an insight as to what the culture and living conditions were like in the Dominican. Something different, but definitely cool!

In all my traveling, this has been one of the most beautiful, romantic places I've visited. It's no wonder it's one of the best kept secrets of the wealthy. The views, the old city look, it's romantic, breathtaking, just wonderful There are also some great little cafes and restaurants to stop in and really take in the views... a MUST... More

We just come back from the 2016 concert of Marc Anthony in Altos de Chavon. We knew the Altos de Chavon village, which is a very nice place to spend an afternoon or a dinner, in the quietness of this anachronistic Italian village, with beautiful views. But the amphitheater, very nice by day, becomes a fantastic place for human sized... More

It started out as an overcast day. We booked the half day trip with Air Transat. The tour guide, Norberto, was excellent. We did not enjoy the bilingual translation back and forth between the French and the English. We were not told that there would be a French language translation prior to the trip. Altos de Chavon was interesting to... More
