That wasn't fishing. That was catching! Everyone in my family on both boats reeled in a nice Mahi mahi. Very nice boats and super nice and knowledgeable employees. After we caught our mahi, we brought them to a local restaurant to cook and ate them for lunch which was delicious.

Our family was a group of 7 of various ages. The crew made sure we all had a great time and we were safe. The boat was super clean and the coolers were full of cold drinks. They made sure we caught fish and a variety too. There was a period of time that we had 3 fish on at the same time. Overall we have been on several charters and this one was by far the best. They made it very easy to catch fish on our cruise stop by coordinating a cab to be waiting for us. Book without fears. We had a great time.

By a comfortable and very affordable bus from Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata and got picked up and brought to the boat. The boat was powerful and fishing gear in excellent condition. The captain and the first mate professional and ftiendly. Lots of refreshmens available and the upper deck provides a more comfortsble area to the hot game zone. It was not a high season for Big game but you never know…
Prefer fishing to a day at the office any day and one of us got her first catches deep sea fishing which was marvellous! Recommend this trip you get to play right away no long drives to fishing sites.

My goal before our Puerto Plata vacation was to go fishing and catch Mahi Mahi. After some research and reading reviews, I decided to book a half day fish (4 hours) on the High Z's fishing tour. As soon as the reservation was made on their website, I received a confirmation email stating the trip was booked and the amount to pay in cash the day of the trip.
On the day of our trip, we were picked up at our resort hotel in a private sedan and we arrived at Ocean World Marina in time for our fishing excursion.
As soon as we were greeted we were treated as first class.
To be honest, the weather was beautiful but the waves were big so for the first part of the trip the fishing was slow. So we were treated with fresh pineapple (the best I have ever tasted.....better than Hawaii and Costa Rica) and also seats at the top bridge.
All of a sudden, we can hear the drag let go and it was Fish On. We landed a female Mahi Mahi and that changed everyone's attitude on the boat to pure excitement. Next we had another hit but lost it right away. Within minutes though we landed another but this time a nice male! We ended up missing another fish but that is the name of the game.
We had a lot of fun and truly enjoyed our half day on the water!
The main question is: Would I go again with High Z's? Absolutely and I hope to again in the near future.
The only disappointment would be that we did not get to have sample of our catch but we didn't ask. So next time that can be discussed. I just hope that the fish was enjoyed!
Thank you High Z's and tight lines!!!!

I booked an 8-hour charter with Captain Nelson of High Z’s to try for some Mahi and white marlin. It was a great experience from start to finish. Captain Nelson personally picked us up at our resort (Cofresi Palm), and told us about fishing conditions and answered all our questions as he dove us to the marina. The boat was one of the nicest I’ve ever fished on (having gone deep sea fishing in OBX, NJ, Cancun, Aruba, etc.) Captain Nelson had gotten my request that we have diet soda and vodka instead of beer, and he had both on ice waiting for us when we got on board. He also had two fresh pineapples, grapes, sandwiches & tons of snacks and other drinks. Because the waters around Puerto Plata are deep, we were able to start trolling right out of the harbor. We got off to a great start with 3 medium size Mahi. After that (knowing that I really wanted to focus on white marlin) the crew switched up the bait. They worked hard the rest of the day to get us on fish but even though they caught a large white marlin the day before, the conditions just weren’t as favorable that afternoon. We still had a great time and the crew (along with the Captain’s 11-year old son, Nelson) was super attentive, getting us drinks and telling us all about life in the DR. When we got back to the marina, we were in for a treat because Captain Nelson is a fantastic cook and he cooked up the Mahi and potatoes (using a fresh herb marinade) on a gas stove right on the boat! Our experience with Captain Nelson didn’t stop there. He learned that we were planning to book a horseback riding excursion through the resort for our group, he offered to book it directly through his connections (at a cost of only $25 per person instead of the $100 per person the resort would have charged) and to personally drive us there and pick us up. He was there exactly on time as promised, and we had an amazing 3-hour ride through the mountains and on the beach with two local guides who were fluent in English and pointed out all the plants and fruit trees along the way. Nelson was waiting for us upon our return and pointed out landmarks and interesting sights on the drive there and back. He didn’t even want to charge us for driving us there but we insisted and he finally accepted $20 to cover gas. He has become our personal guide in Puerto Plata — he’s even picking us up on Friday for dinner reservations along the ‘Boulevard’ to enjoy a sunset dinner on the beach. If you book with High Z’s and Captain Nelson you will not be disappointed! You will get a friend who will help you make the most of your time in Puerto Plata.

I am an avid offshore fisherman and have fished all throughout the Bahamas, Mexico, Costa Rica and the east coast of Florida and the Keys. Anywhere I travel throughout these areas I always charter an offshore fishing boat (I have an offshore boat also and fish off shore frequently). I researched Puerto Plata and found that Nelson (High Z's) was the best bet...and I wasn't disappointed. Nelson and his first mate were absolutely great. We came in on the Norwegian Escape (ran aground leaving port in Puerto Plata that night - that was fun), Nelson picked myself and my 18 year old son up at the pier, short drive to the marina, boarded the boat and had lines in within 10 mins of leaving dock (5 lines, trolling, good ballyhoo bait). The boat is in good condition (nothing super fancy, but very nice, clean & comfortable inside and out for a family, even small kids), the gear they use is top notch and we did catch 2 Mahi and one Blackfin Tuna in 6-9ft seas (50ft boat took it well). We fileted one side of the Mahi and Nelson cooked it up right on the boat, ocean to belly within an hour! We could only do the 4 hour trip because we had to get back to the cruise ship but would have definitely caught more if we had more time. Nelson knows the waters very well and knows how to spot the fish, however I never blame the captain if we don't catch anything...remember it is called "fishing", not "catching". One example of how friendly Nelson is, when our cruise ship ran aground in the port leaving Puerto Plata, he found out about it and emailed me asking if my family and I needed a place to stay, he offered us dinner and more fishing if we wanted it...that right there is just being a good human being! Would have loved to join him for dinner (he is a really good cook) but they wouldn't let us off the boat. Overall a great trip, best boat in the area for sure (trust me, I checked them all) and Nelson was a pleasure to work with!

Thanks so much Steve, it is a real pleasure for us to receive this type of comments from anglers as experienced as you. We hope to fish together again in the future! Regards

My wife and I booked this trip directly on High Z’s website. Very well run business. Fast responses to my questions and they even sent a reminder email the evening before confirming trip, pick up and what to bring.

We wanted to fish early so they picked us up at 630am. We booked a 6hr trip on a 32foot boat. The captain and second captain were really nice and friendly. Experienced fisherman as well! They worked hard to get us on fish. Trolling through floating patches of weeds and continuously bringing back in bait to remove any weeds off the hooks. We got 5 hits within 30 minutes just off the docks. Later on we ended catching two Mahi Mahis.

Cooler was full of beverages (water/pop/beers) and there was chips and snacks plus sandwiches on board.

We enjoyed our day on the water. Only issue would be with the design of the boat. There’s little to no room to sit on the back deck. Other than the fighting chair, we either had to sit on the edge of the boat or a cooler. Yes there’s plenty of room in the galley (kitchen/dining area) but there’s not a chance we’re sitting in there to avoid sea sickness.

I would definitely book with this company again but would request a boat where we could both sit comfortably on the back deck.
