We arrived by cruise ship and our original tour operator in Puerto Plata canceled our ATV tour at the last minute when we were already in port. I had e-mailed Marysol Tours before the trip but had not booked with them over concerns that there might not be a lot we wanted to see in Puerto Plata. The meeting location happened to be the same for both companies, and Fabio from Marysol greeted us by name even though we were not booked with him. It turned out to be a nice day and good experience with Marysol Tours. We did a city tour of Puerto Plata in a modern Hyundai van with air conditioning. Our guide Fabio did a great job explaining the local attractions and offered us water, soda, and even rum to drink if we liked. He was a great host, very accommodating. He also did a pretty good job of running interference for us, getting rid of local vendors who sometimes hassle you at stops like these. As for the tour itself, I will say that many of the stops are just shopping opportunities (Amber museum, chocolate "factory", which is just a store, tiny local souvenir shops, etc). If you like to shop you will enjoy this tour more than the historical/culture folks. However, we did not feel pressured to spend money as you do some places. There is only so much to see and do in Puerto Plata I'm afraid. Despite that downside, we enjoyed seeing the local sights, especially the fort, cathedral, and rum factory, and our guide was interesting and informative. We did not visit the cable cars, but I think that attraction might have been closed for the day so maybe it's different when you visit. If I were to improve this tour, I'd delete some of the uninteresting shopping opportunities and build in a couple hours at a nice beach or park, cable car place, etc. Otherwise, it was a good 3-4 hour tour and worth the price paid to a good local operator. I would not recommend driving or touring Puerto Plata on your own if you are unfamiliar with it.
