    Toured on our own
We decided to take a taxi for an island tour as we had already been here in March. Our driver Luis, took very good care of us. He took us to Monsenior de Pur=erto Plata where you can watch the artisans rolling cigars which you can try and purchase. There were many thousands of cigars in their humadors. We then went to Mount Isabel for a picturesque view of the area. Then we went to Fort San Felipe which overlooks the harbour. We also went to a couple of markets where the locals shop to see the items that were available. Luis then took us to his home for a cup of Dominican coffee. If anyone wants a great tour of the area, I have Luis's contact information.

Puerto Plata is the best city in DR.
This is my 3rd time visiting La loma Isabel de Torres. I love this place. It gives me peace and happiness and the pictures are phenomenal. My kids had never been there and they absolutely loved the place. If you are not in a hurry, make sure you walk all the way to the back of the park. The views (mountains) on that side are beautiful as well .

    Come to Cabarete!
I stayed in ProCab, Cabarete on the North Coast in a private studio rental that my friends suggested. I am still here until early April and I’m having a wonderful time. The studio is near the beaches but is a fair walk to the closest supermercado (Janet’s). There are a ton of restaurants and bars nearby and lots to do in the evenings…dancing, karaoke, open mike, talented musicians, drink and food specials! Not much in the way of shopping but you can take a taxi or guagua to Sea Horse Ranch, Jumbo Superstore, coffee and cocoa plantation tours/tastings, kite surfing, paddle boarding, scuba, fishing and tons of excellent dining experiences. I highly recommend Cabarete!!! Suz E Q

Plenty to see even in the fog
We visited Mount Isabel de Torres as part of a cruiseline excursion, so we took a small bus from Puerto Plata up to the top. It was foggy and drizzled rain for half the time we were in the park but that didn't dampen our enthusiasm for the beautiful flowers and plants along the paths in this well-kept park. We were able to catch a glimpse of the town from where the cable cars usually disembark, and the fog lifted enough for us to snap a picture of the Christ statue. There are several paths to walk which when it is wet can be a little bit treacherous, but they do have handrails and steps to assist.

"enjoy the views, but do not, and I repeat, DO NOT go into any of the shops at the base of the statue .. beware of Arian and Gorge (pronounced Hor-heh) for they will rip you off right in front of you! if you're going to buy anything (that will be overpriced)....use cash only, we foolishly used our credit card and were overcharged $500 and are currently in a dispute with American Express to try to salvage some of our funds. They "claimed" that the credit card was not working and kept getting declined, but in the meantime they were stealing from us in front of our faces and lying.

Be sure and drive or have a driver take you to the mountain top! It is a beautiful, lush green drive and the views are amazing. When you get there someone will ask if they can help by taking pictures. The guy who did ours did a great job with various poses and then led us to his jewelry table! No worries, you can so no and give him a tip for taking the pictures. The cable car was not operating when we were there, but we go back next year and hope it will be up and running at that time.

It's a good activity if you are in the area. When we went it was cloudy up there so not much view on the top of the mountain, but it is nice up there on its own, there is a pond/pool to visit don't miss that (there are stairs that lead to it). A guide offered assistance and we accepted, but it ended up being unnecessary (and he was watching videos on his cellphone as opposed to providing any info or offering to take any photos!)

The ride to the top was very enjoyable and seeing all the sights below was amazing. Highly recommend and even the wait to get on to the ride there was entertainment in the waiting room, air conditioning and amenities. Went early in the morning to avoid long line ups.

We took the cable car to get here which I would recommend instead of driving. Very cool spot with many interesting areas to walk and check out. There was a person that took our picture and was very pushy when it came time to leave to buy something at their families little spot.

Excursion to Mt. Isabel is a great day out from your resort. Despite the Teleferico not working I encourage people going up in a rented car.
There're 2 roads up, each is around a 30 min drive.
For ascending we used the eastern road which goes through country side, and is in perfect condition.
When descending we used the western road which goes through picturesque villages, but here you must drive with caution as the road is in a very bad condition - uneven surface with many potholes.
Once up there's a beautiful view of Puerto Plata, Christ statue, botanical garden,etc...Count on around 2-3 hours for the whole excursion.

Super side trip, takes about two hours to to do total. Try to go early if there is a cruise ship in town otherwise you are going to waiting in line. The cost is $10 per person. Also, as its on the mountain, its a nice break from the heat.
