We visited the Amber Museum while on the City Tour. It was much smaller than I had anticipated but was interesting. Vendors were everywhere. There seemed to be no way to avoid them and, if you tried, you were looked upon as an unwelcome and...More

This is an interesting part of the City Tour Excursion. Beautiful pieces of amber jewelry are also available to purchase.

The amber was very interesting and almost memorizing. With the light behind the pieces it made them so incredible. I never knew that amber originated from tree sap, so that made a great educational stop.

The exhibit was just fair. Nothing overly memorable. There are some interesting pieces of work, but not much thought behind how they are explained by the guides.

This was part of our "Top 10 of Puerto Plata" Tour that we did while in the Dominican Republic. Decent amount of amber pieces to look at; some of them contained small organisms like insects and lizards. Very Jurassic Park themed. Not an overly long...More

Very interesting. Went right into the factory. Saw how it’s turned into jewelry. Almost bought a happy hour ring. Kicking myself now.

It was interesting to learn about the history and the way it is found, but I would not go out of my way unless it is part of a tour.

I don’t know much about stones, but I know for certain they sell Larimar and Amber. There may be a trip which you can do through your holiday rep, and it would probably be included in a city tour. Alternatively you could... More

I've never done that actual trip but have been to all the places that are mentioned under my own steam. You can easily get to all the places mentioned and as I recall, the rum factory & fort are both free of charge while the Amber Museum has a small charge, so you are probably paying about US$35 for the transport & guidance. The trip up the mountain is fantastic, we even had an eagle soaring alongside our cable-car as we went up! I think the cable car is about $10 but I wouldn't swear...More

Caribbean World Amber Museum (2 Replies)
Internet research indicates this new museum is in the 1829 Hotel. We will be arriving on a cruise ship and have the afternoon free. Does anyone have info on this exhibit, i.e., distance from the port, how to get there, etc.?

1829 is in town and pretty much equidistant from both cruise ship docks and the taxi ride will cost you $4-$5 per person.
Confresi beach to Sosua (2 Replies)
We are staying at Lifestyle crown villas at Confresi Beach. We would like to do the cable car ride and go to Sosua on the same day. How long of a ride is it from Confresi beach to Sosua beach and what would you recomend doing along the way? I don't think we are interested in the Amber museum or fort....any other suggestions would be great!

I can't really say how long it is by taxi, but we were living next door at Sun Village and went to Sosua by way of catamaran. We were gone for about half a day and stopped in Sosua for snorkelling. Sosua is very lovely.
