If you are in SD you have to visit. Use an official city guild. It is worth the small amount to pay! The cafes are a great place eat.

The Catedral Primada de America is an important historical and cultural monument, part of the rich heritage of the Dominican Republic. It is an active Roman Catholic cathedral, and also is able to be visited by tourists. It is managed by a very good visitors program.

what would be a quite unimpressive basilica in Spain. But built 1521-1540 under the conditions of the new founded colony it's quite a unique masterpiece with many gothic elements

The first (" La Primada" in Spanish) Catholic cathedral in the New World is something that you have to visit while you be in Santo Domingo. It is a piece of history built by breaks. As an architect I could tell -withouth read anything in a book- how the different chapels were added in different times, changing styles and colors.... More

Such a lovely building from the outside in and is the center of the colonial area. We had a guided tour (were seated with earphones to get the history and then roamed on our own). Each private chapel is personally decorated so each has its own flavor. If you're going to Santo Domingo, this is a must to get the... More

I can't write too much because I am not a religious person but it's definitely a nice building with a warm colour that comes from the stone they used to build it, I don't think you can find church of this colour in Europe . When you will go inside you could forget to be in the Caribbean ! It's... More

It is a small and not spetacular cathedral mainly gothique (heavily restaurated) with no outstanding pieces of art. However it deserves a visit if you are in Santo Domingo mainly because it's history: it is the first church of the Americas.
