The Columbus park is the second main square (park) along with Plaza de Espana.
While the Plaza de Espana is by the Alcazar edifice, Columbus park is by the first Cathedral of the Americas.
The park is always busy with street performers and sellers, live music and in the middle of it is a bronze statue of Christopher Columbus. Many bars around to sip a drink and enjoy the atmosphere.

This was quite a busy square on the colonial zone. It had a combination of tourists and locals.

We found it to be noisy at times with locals either playing music, or on the loudspeaker.

It has a Columbus Statue, and is near the exit from the Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor.

There are a lot of Pigeons in the square that made it fun for kids.

We loved this square/plaza. It occupies the spot right next to the oldest cathedral in Latin America, is in the heart of the colonial zone and is very popular with the locals. On the day we were there it was full of what appeared to by musical groups or music students taking music lessons. But with the restaurants, shops, cathedral and all the commercial activity it is intoxicating. if you come here please note the walking street (Condon) that begins here and ends with the Independence square. The walking street is full of shops and restaurants and is a must see

Located in the heart of the Colonial Zone, Parque Colon is bordered by the Catedral Primada de America, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Grab a coffee or cerveza (Presidente) and watch the locals, artists, performers, and tourists alike. The children love to chase the pigeons and those in the know bring bread crumbs in order to take a photo of the birds eating out of their hands.

People watching at the Parque Colon quickly became my favorite thing to do in an otherwise disappointing city. Highly recommended.

The central square of the Ciudad Colonial historic district. Situated in a nice spot popular for both tourist and local. It is god starting and a ending point for a walk. A large square with a small park in front of the cathedral, the first cathedral in the New World. Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants - and a lot of pigeons! Sit down and enjoy life passing by. The park is surrounded by beautiful colonial and later buildings and presided over by an impressive statue of Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon in Spanish). It is said that Parque Colon is one of the nicest open spaces in Santo Domingo. The park is also near one end of the Calle El Condo, once one of the Dominican Republic capital's main thoroughfares and now a pedestrianized boulevard of cafes and touristic stores.
Previously the square was known as Plaza Mayor.

If you visit this beautiful city you must visit this park. Sit in the cafe on the corner, beneath the hotel, sip a beer and watch the world go by.

From this park , you are directly in front of the famous first cathedral built in the Americas somewhere back in the mid-1500's
In addition there are lovely centuries old shady banyan trees all around the park with lots of benches to sit . People watching is a favorite past-time of many tourists , and in doing so you get to see some very interesting views of Santo Domingo and Dominican life .

We really enjoyed the square, the surrounding attractions and the restaurants. There are definitely plenty of vendors and tour guides ready and willing to sell you stuff and guide you around the city. We opted to venture off on our own...well that is after our parking attendant/tour guide (Jose Manuel Perez) lead us to two attractions. Just a little more on this; when we arrived in the area of the square Jose Manuel was wearing a yellow parking jacket and assisted us with parking on the street (incidentally just a block further was public parking). Once we parked he took off his yellow jacket and became a "tour guide". This was for $30 a day. I did not let it deter us, but you should know the guys assisting you in parking may not really be hired by the city:)

With all that said it was an awesome visit to Santo Domingo:)
