We loved this square/plaza. It occupies the spot right next to the oldest cathedral in Latin America, is in the heart of the colonial zone and is very popular with the locals. On the day we were there it was full of what appeared to by musical groups or music students taking music lessons. But with the restaurants, shops, cathedral and all the commercial activity it is intoxicating. if you come here please note the walking street (Condon) that begins here and ends with the Independence square. The walking street is full of shops and restaurants and is a must see

Hello, we are in Santo Domingo for a few days exploring the Zone Colonial. I will send some pictures and information.
The recorded history of the Dominican Republic began in 1492 when the Genoa-born navigator Christopher Columbus, working for the Crown of Castile, happened upon a large island in the region of the western Atlantic Ocean that later came to be known as the Caribbean.

You really can't say you've been to Santo Domingo if you have not been there. This is one of the most beautifull places in Santo Domingo, not mentioning the "Conde" street. You should know that this area is a UNESCO World Heritage Jewel

Located in the heart of the Colonial Zone, Parque Colon is bordered by the Catedral Primada de America, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Grab a coffee or cerveza (Presidente) and watch the locals, artists, performers, and tourists alike. The children love to chase the pigeons and those in the know bring bread crumbs in order to take a photo of the birds eating out of their hands.
People watching at the Parque Colon quickly became my favorite thing to do in an otherwise disappointing city. Highly recommended.

Great place to hang out and people watch. There was an awesome band playing and all the locals singing along. We had a great time here! Wish we could have gotten into the church there, but it was closed that day.

The central square of the Ciudad Colonial historic district. Situated in a nice spot popular for both tourist and local. It is god starting and a ending point for a walk. A large square with a small park in front of the cathedral, the first cathedral in the New World. Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants - and a lot of pigeons! Sit down and enjoy life passing by. The park is surrounded by beautiful colonial and later buildings and presided over by an impressive statue of Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon in Spanish). It is said that Parque Colon is one of the nicest open spaces in Santo Domingo. The park is also near one end of the Calle El Condo, once one of the Dominican Republic capital's main thoroughfares and now a pedestrianized boulevard of cafes and touristic stores.
Previously the square was known as Plaza Mayor.

This is a great location to people watch and have a beer in one of the outdoor cafes. The atmosphere is relaxed, there are loads of tourists, tourist guides, and police there- so the area is safe.

If you visit this beautiful city you must visit this park. Sit in the cafe on the corner, beneath the hotel, sip a beer and watch the world go by.

From this park , you are directly in front of the famous first cathedral built in the Americas somewhere back in the mid-1500's
In addition there are lovely centuries old shady banyan trees all around the park with lots of benches to sit . People watching is a favorite past-time of many tourists , and in doing so you get to see some very interesting views of Santo Domingo and Dominican life .
