The Freshwater Lake sits at the foot of Morne Micotrin (Macaque), over 1.5 miles above sea level. At the Freshwater Lake visitor center, there is information on Morne Trois Pitons National Park, which includes the lake. Swimming in the lake is allowed, but not encouraged due to its depth. Kayaking on the lake is available. It is typically misty and cool at the lake due to its high elevation. When we visited, it rained for a few minutes, which we came to understand was quite typical there. The lake is a protected area as part of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crater lake is the largest freshwater lake on the island and supports its hydroelectric energy initiatives. If you are lucky, you may see, or hear, a few parrots flying around in the area.

We went on this hike today, April 2, and it was not what we expected! The path around the lake is a moderate level hike, we expected it to be a nice walk around the edge of the lake but you end up climbing 3 of the smaller mountains! It had amazing views at the top and even though the stairs were tiring, it was very much worth it! The hike took us more than an hour but we also stopped a lot to take in the scenery and the get pictures! Not only do you get a view of the whole lake, you also get to see all the other mountains and the valleys between them! Today was overcast so we couldn't really see the ocean, but if it were a clear day, the view would have been that much better! Overall worth the stairs and now we get to say we climbed three mountains!!

We walked around Freshwater Lake on a drizzly afternoon. That may have been a not so great idea as some areas along the trail were extremely slippery mud and very steep. We just laughed about getting all muddy though and had a fantastic time anyhow! Part of the trail is very easy, but other parts are very steep. I would not recommend this to anyone who is not physically fit.

We visited almost as an afterthought but very glad we did. Such a peaceful place, so quiet tie nothing but the occasional light breeze in your ears. This is quite different than the rainforests or on the coast. It is also cooler though it was still T shirt weather in January.
We had the place to ourselves for most of the time. We weren't there for more than a couple of hours but this was rewarding experience. Another time we'd definitely spend a day up here, hire the kayaks and do some hiking in the area.
Had a pleasant, freshly made though plain sandwiches at the visitor centre.

If you want to go kayaking or rent a boat, you need to call ahead. When we went, there was no one there. It was a kinda long drive up to the lake, and then when you get there, it looks like any other lake. It's also pretty cold compared to the rest of Dominica, so if you want to go swimming, you should go someplace else. Walking around the lake was okay, but I think there's much nicer hikes than this one.

This is something to remember. You drive a steep road, and due to its height, lake is surrounded by different plants than you see in lower parts of Dominica. Some dwarf trees, moss, high-altitude palms. all together, it is lush and beautiful, while amazingly peaceful and relaxing, even on a windy day. Birds sing their songs played like on glass flutes, long airy notes. lake shimmers in the sun, or changes colour with every passing cloud. It is so much cooler up there that you almost may need long pants. almost. it often stays at around 20 Celsius, very refreshing even on a very hot day. If you like walking, you can go on the loop encircling the lake. Views are amazing, walk is easy in most parts, although in a few spots it is quite steep and wooden-made stairs would do with some maintenance. If you don't want to go through whole loop (around 1 hour, or longer if you stop to take photos), then you can at least go the first 10 minutes and then back. First 10 minutes is really easy and would bring you to the first scenic point from which you can see the whole lake from above. spectacular! You can go back then, or continue. and if you do - from the higher part you will see so much of the island, even the Rosalie bay area on Atlantic side. This is great spot for everyone, as you can make it as easy as you want. On your return you can have a drink or snack in main building near your parking spot. We enjoy this place a lot, visited it already 3 times. Every time it seems different.

So strange, when you come up, the wether changes and it becomes a lot colder, than at the beach, it is nice for a change if you stay longer at Dominica

We hiked around Freshwater Lake - it took maybe 1.5-2 hours, but we weren't rushing. The views were spectacular - you can see out to the Caribbean on one side and the Atlantic on the other - and the plant life incredibly lush and diverse. Very steep in places - I was quite happy I'd brought a walking stick. They are in the process of installing railings but still, definitely recommend good hiking boots or at least sneakers. Also, it's quite a bit cooler up in the mountains so bring some layers. There is also a small interpretive center at the bottom with interesting info on flora and fauna, geology, and history. Highly recommend going to Ti Kwen Glo Cho hot springs for a soak after your hike!

Very pretty sights. In theory you can also swim in the lake but in practice it’s probably too cold. If you like hiking, this should be a good one. Other than that there isn’t much to do but the scenery is beautiful.

Being English I can only compare the freshwater lake to one of the water reservoirs found dotted around England. There is nothing to do at the venue except look at the water. The only thing going for it is the fact that it is high up in the mountains and the views are spectacular.
