After a bunch of "discovery" dives at various resort destinations, I decided to devote a couple of vacation days to completing my open water diver certification with the great team at Ocean Encounters Diving - Curacao.

Their facility, equipment, and personnel are top-notch. My instructor Ivo was highly knowledgeable and helped build my confidence and skills with each session.

I was able to complete the theory sessions with the online SSI app and completed 2 skill practicing dives in shallow water and 4 open water dives along their house reef. It was terrific. I had only 2 other divers in class and we were able to spend some quality time exploring the reef and the local aquatic live.

Everyone I interacted with at Ocean Encounters went out of their way to ensure I was feeling comfortable and confident. I highly recommend their training center in Curacao for earning your initial diving certification and guiding your dive trip.

I have been diving around the world and I’m currently working on becoming an instructor. I have been to Curaçao this February 2020, I am supposed to go to Belize in about three weeks for a week-long liveaboard dive trip, and we have 3 weeks booked for November this year for a whole lot of diving!

The dive shop is onsite at Sunscape resort (see my Sunscape review), they have a nice gear room that is locked at night, and a nice dock with easy access to board the boat. Their main shop is 5 minutes up the road/water where they dock the boats at night, but they go back and forth every day. You can either stay onsite at Sunscape or any resort nearby and simply transport to their main shop. Easy.

I truly enjoyed diving with the Ocean Encounters dive team. Everyone was nice, the dive team, boat captains, everyone. The boats nice, each had a head, all the appropriate safety gear (first aid, oxygen, etc.), and freshwater shower heads. They help with your gear, and truly try to make your time enjoyable.

The dive masters and captains are very safety minded as well. Always attentive to everyone’s needs, role call when dive is complete before boat pulls away, checking each diver before entering the water (you know, is your air turned on?).

The dives were good, lots and lots of life! Large macro soft coral. Light currents, light surging, simply easy diving.

I enjoyed diving all week with everyone. Enjoyed visiting the shop and chatting, so many nice folks. Cynthia was wonderful. I enjoyed our tugboat dive where we went under the pier and more.

We recently did a week of diving in Curacao. This was a last minute trip so we had to break apart our stays at Lion's Dive (main Ocean Encounters Location) and Sunscape. This isn't a review about that.

The diving was generally good. Nothing big except for a few turtles but the large staghorn coral formations was awesome to see.

We told Ocean Encounters before arriving and multiple times after arriving that we were moving hotels to cover ourselves. They handled it extremely well with our changing requests and huge shoutout to the office staff. We had a small billing issue and after a quick talk with the manager that was taken care of.

Captain Jeremiah was awesome to talk with and picked out some great sites.

Instructor/Guide Remy has a positive attitude that is truly contagious. He was awesome to dive with. He went the extra mile with us and I could tell he does that out for everyone.

We definitely recommend the lion fish dive but would avoid the other afternoon dives as they're usually snorkel locations and unfortunately, not that healthy.

Today was our second time diving with Ocean Encounters since we arrived in Curaçao October 2nd. We have had the opportunity to dive with a couple of other dive operators that have been wonderful. Unfortunately, this was not our experience with OE. The first time we rented tanks and weights to dive their house reef. There was no one around to get us our tanks and give us a briefing even though we were told that both would be no problem. We did eventually get to dive and the reef was nice and we saw some great things including schooling squid.
Our second time with them was a boat dive. We chose to dive with them so we could go places you couldn't get to from shore as was promised when we booked it. When we arrived the itinerary had changed and we would only be diving to one non-shore dive location. The person that checked us in had no idea what to charge us for nitrox and charged us $15 more per tank and than anywhere else on the island. Since our tanks were already in the boat we could not decline.
The dives themselves were chaos. The divemasters seemed to be completely unaware of what was happening with the divers they were in charge of. They had no idea how much air any one diver might have and they never once checked on me either dive to see if I was ok. I doubt they knew I was there. I would never do another dive with them again. Especially when there are so many wonderful operators on the island. And they are the most expensive by far. Nope.

Ocean Encounters has a satellite shop at the Sunscape resort. That is where we stayed and will be to focus of this review. We had 3 days of boat diving before the country shut down and boat diving was canceled. The boat dives were great, big boats, competent staff, and they do put a dive master in the water to lead the dive. Diving was typical Caribbean diving, beautiful blue water, healthy fish populations even with the Lionfish. Then Covid showed up and tried to spoil the fun....again.

This is where Jorge at the OE shop put on his superhero uniform and saved the day. We were a group of 16 with 12 divers. Jorge went out of his way to make sure we had all the tanks we would need for the day or evening when we did night dives. We had a key to a large locker room where we could hang our gear and dive whenever we wanted.

I did enjoy the large boats instead of 6-pack boats and the boat crews were great, but Jorge saved our vacations. I had over 15 hours on the house Reef from 20 feet to a full deco dive to a sunken barge at 165 feet. The Reef is easy enough for first time divers with a hard battom at 20 feet which runs to a wall starting at 40 feet and dropping deeper than most want to go. I could not see the bottom at 160+.

It's people that make the difference in any dive shop a Jorge is one of the best.

Ocean Encounters and Coral Restoration Curacao (CRC) have a great partnership going. I was able to complete my PADI Coral Restoration Diver Specialty with them and then put my learning to work out in the coral nurseries and outplantings they have just offshore. This was a wonderful way to combine my love of diving with doing just a little something to help. Each time I ‘worked’ on the corals, I met other divers that also understood the necessity and the thrill of helping these amazing communities grow. On a more selfish note, while swimming back to shore, I came across some of those less common creatures I love to see including: a seahorse, upside down jellyfish, squid, an octopus, a flying gunard and a box crab! I like to think that if people understood how important corals are to both the life in our oceans and how they impact our own lives on land that groups like CRC would have so many volunteers and affiliated dive companies that there would be coral nurseries everywhere! I understand the aquarium next door is also doing some coral restoration work and I heard a couple of other dive shops on the island are becoming interested in helping out. Maybe it’s starting...
Every time I went out and cleaned the coral trees or got a chance to outplant corals was an opportunity for me to give a little of my time and energy to something important. Thank you to Katie Leeper, Hannah and the crew of Ocean Encounters for making this possible.

In September, I and 30 other friends traveled to Curacao to dive with Ocean Encounters. We have been taking annual dive trips to various Caribbean and Central American countries and Mexico for 15 years and we have never encountered such excellent service as what we got from the Ocean Encounters team. From the moment we boarded the dive boat, the crew were friendly, excited to have us aboard and joined in all the fun we experienced during our 5-days of diving. Jeremiah, the owner and boat Captain operates a fantastic dive operation and everything ran extremely smoothly. When I had problems with my regulator he personally took it back to his shop in-between dives, fixed and returned it to my hotel within an hour. The dive master crew, of Pol, Vivian and Charlotte were outstanding. They gave very good detailed briefings before each dive, pointed out sealife on the dive, but allowed every diver to have the freedom to enjoy their own dive profiles without sacrificing safety. I feel so fortunate to have gotten to dive with Ocean Encounters and considered each and every one of the crew to now be friends.

We picked this place to call home for two weeks staying at the Lion’s Dive because of the resort being linked to Ocean’s Encounter. What a beautiful and amazing time we had as we dived 8 days out of the 14 days we were in Curaçao. From the first morning every person working for this shop greeted us with nothing but smiles and eager to help. Not used to the early morning and having my coffee grumps I quickly disguarded my mood and was overtaken by their genuine excitement and knowledgeable that all members of this team were with everyone. From Remy, our wonderful captain that took us out many a mornings giving us Curaçao history and helping me pull my tank up the stairs to the boat, to some of the instructors that spent their time sharing beautiful creatures and lasting memories…Vivanna, Charlotte, Jorge, Sean, Raul, Lena for being amazing snd setting up our dives, Jeremiah sharing his personal weights for us to dive with. We also got our Nitrox certification with KM helping us. They were a extreme delight to dive with and complete 17 dives with them including a night dive showing their coral restoration program. I’d give them 20 stars if I could. A pleasure to dive with

This dive operation is great.

You are going to love diving with these people. PADI should seriously send low performing shop owners here to work with this crew to see diving done right.

The boat dives are perfectly designed so you do your safety stop in the shallows on the way back to the boat. No floating aimlessly in the sea at 15 feet for three minutes on most dives. Dives are almost always 60 minutes or more. (The reefs and sea life in Curaçao are amazing and healthy.) If you are experienced, they do not treat you like children, they let you do your own thing as long as you keep up with the group enough so they can see your bubbles. Never once in 26 Dips was I asked what my tank pressure was. The only requirement is that the 1st person to hit a half tank lets them know and we turnaround and head to shallow water. (The shallow water diving is great and teeming with marine life.) I find dive leaders who ask your air pressure every 10 minutes to be a distraction and a bore. If you are new to diving, they keep an eye you without you realizing it. You will have the illusion you did the dive by yourself. They have well maintained boats and equipment.

If you want to rent a car and shore dive they are great in helping you pick spots and plan your dives.

They are all enthusiastic about the sea and Curaçao, very friendly and competent. I think this is a reflection on the manager Jeremiah an really great leader. They have a divemaster, Remy, who should be in the SCUBA hall of fame for his excellent dive leading ability. The shore crew, Chrissy, George and Elaine are efficient and wonderful. We will come back and dive with this outfit again.

The dive operation at Ocean Encounters was fantastic. 4 boats total. All in very nice condition. Dive staff was very attentive. Jeremiah (owner) was fantastic, although all the divemasters and captains were equally friendly, helpful and attentive.

We were staying at Lions Dive so had the luxury of shore diving (day and night if we wanted).
Shore diving was good, with a surface swim ~ 1/10th of mile or less. We did a number of night dives, saw octopus, lobster, crab, etc. It is well marked with a guide rope on the sea floor. There is also a coral restoration project you can review.

The boat dives were great. Plenty of space. No center consoles on the boat, so it made it seem extra spacious.
Even at maximum capacity of 20+ divers (which was rare), there was enough room and didn't feel over crowded.

SCUBA in Curacao can offer some current. A number of the dives turned into drift dives in real time and many required tag lines for extraction. The crew was Very attentive in briefing how this would be handled. The crew was also very attentive in making everyone got out of the water. The crew told us that the currents were mostly a winter season thing.

The divemasters would give you as much or as little attention as you liked. They would swap out your tanks if you like, or let you do it if you prefer. Megan was incredibly knowledgeable as she is a Marine Biologist. All of the staff was helpful and willing to share knowledge. It had been a year since I had dove Nitrox and they were very helpful in double checking my process.

Pre dive briefings were informative and consistently provided.

The divemasters were always on the lookout for marine life to view.

The facilities were great with lockers and hanging racks for all the gear. There were plenty of wash tanks that were kept clean and full as well as outdoor rinse showers on the boats as well as on land.

If returning to Curacao I'd highly recommend Ocean Encounters.
