I had a blast today with the generous and patient help of Michael! He let me use water shoes and patiently got me all suited up while he taught me how to steer myself in the water. He even kept encouraging me despite me absolutely sucking at this incredibly difficult activity to master! I did make it out of the water a few times but wowie it is hard to not lean and to keep my feet flat! Despite how difficult this is, I had a fantastic time getting up a few times and then buzzing around to and from shore belly-down in the water.

This is *cash only* and there is no change.

This was so much fun to do I would go back and do it again and again. It was my 30th Birthday and I wanted to do something exciting and I picked Flyboarding. To be clear, there is no type of experience needed you just have to be able to follow directions and allow yourself to have fun. The instructor Beer (pronounced Bear) was patient and very thorough. Even after he explained himself a few times, once you are in the water he was absolutely great working with me. He's not bad to look at too :)
My boyfriend got the hang of it after a few times and had a blast, flew close to 12-15 feet in the air. I got it on the first shot (with bad knees and all).
For those wanting to try- you absolutely must do it. It is very safe, sure you may fall a few times but you fall into the water, so it's fine.
Price: It's about an hour and it costed $139 each person. (WORTH IT!)
Where: Located at Jan Thiel beach, make sure you let them know when you get there that you are there for an appointment, they won't charge you to enter the private beach.
Camera: You are not allowed to wear a GoPro but people can easily take pictures from the beach. Or if you have a waterproof camera, the instructor can take pictures for you.
Wear: Girls- if you have shorts to wear over your bikini's I would suggest to, because when you come out from the water you bottoms can come down. Guys- board shorts or swimwear are great.

My boyfriend and I reserved Zapata Flyboarding a couples of days before and left a deposit of 25$ each. Once we arrived their the day of the reservation we realized that our car rental was due that same day, my boyfriend went first since he really wanted to do it and I was kinda coming along for the trip. The young instructor took my boyfriend and was very patient from the start however the older instructor was rushing him from the start. Once he ended I realized that we werent going to make out car rental if I went, I explained my predicament and within seconds the older instructor took an angry tone and demanded my portion of Flyboarding, even though I was not given a service. After exchanging some rude words I gave him $50 and left.

All in all the service that was given by the young instructor was a lot of fun. So I do recommend it just dont cancel/take too long.

Just tried this today, despite the on and off rain, and it is an amazing experience! The owners are friendly, helpful and take the utmost care on your safely. One of the best things to do on Curacao!

Make a day out of it and grab beach chairs and lunch at Zanzibar, have a drink and try jet skiing. A perfect beach day!

When telling friends about a vacation, you will almost always have someone who has been to the same place and done the same thing. If you would like to have an adventure that you can be certain none of your friends already did, then try flyboarding.

As soon as I saw a video of this on youtube, I knew I would like to try it. It was a happy coincidence that it was available at Curacao. I emailed and made my reservation immediately.

Unlike many destinations around the island, Jan Thiel was pretty easy to find. We made it there (from Willibrodus) with no trouble.

When we arrived at the beach, a 12-year-old girl was getting fitted out for her flyboard experience. I was glad to see that a lifejacket is required. The helmet, Wim explained, isn't really to protect your head from striking anything hard. It was so it hurt less when he smacked you in the back of the head to get your attention.

Of course there really wasn't any smacking. Wim, the owner and competitive flyboarder (flyboardist?), was a very personable and friendly guy who clearly enjoys what he does.

Back to the young girl ... she did not have a good experience. She tried unsuccessfully for 15 minutes, then gave up. Here twin sister tried next, and within 10 minutes, she was flying like a champ and navigating the flyboard well.

Wim later told me that the younger sister was very afraid about falling over backward in the water. He explained to her that the water in the front was the same as in the back, but she wasn't having it.

My turn rolled around. You get your life jacket and helmet, then 10 minutes of explanation about how the flyboard works and how to fly it.

Off to the water. I was a bit intimidated because the bay where you fly is lined on side by the crowded Jan Thiel beach. As a flyboarder, you become the entertainment for the gallery lining the beach.

Fortunately, flyboarding was, as most reviews say, pretty easy. Keep your body straight and relaxed and make your movements gentle. I found it helpful to watch the horizon when starting.

Flying is a great experience. Wim continued to provide coaching to help me improve and better navigate the board. He said that most people take a few minute, in-water break after about 20 minutes. I was too amped up to rest, but after my 40 minutes, I was pretty well out of gas.

Wim buys you a beer after your flight to celebrate. Nice touch. The beer is courtesy of Polar Beer, his local sponsor.

Wim explained that he's a bit frustrated that he isn't a cruise-ship excursion because they demand a 45% commission. The nearby hotels are US-owned, and they won't offer package deals that include flyboarding due to the liability. So he counts on people like me who find him on the Internet.

If you are on a cruise ship and can get to Jan Thiel beach, do it. Make a reservation with Wim via Facebook or his email so you know that your flyboarding will fit into your itinerary. There are several restaurants and other activities on the beach to make it an afternoon.

This was such a great experience, a wonderful memory and will be my #1 story to friends when I return. And none of them will be able to say "Oh yeah ... I did that, too."

My family stopped here in on a cruise in March, grabbed a cab at the port and we were at the beach in about 15 minutes. After about 10 minutes of instructions, my 12 year old daughter decided it wasn't for her. The guys never even balked about losing a sale. I continued on with it, and had one of the greatest rushes I have had, getting airborne in about 10 minutes and doing dolphin dives after another 10. The guys here could not have been more professional, never pushing me, yet always encouraging. Thanks again, for a great thrill.

What a great fun thing to do! It was amazing! Totally recommended! It is a 10 minute theory then around 40 minutes on the water. Great staff, very nice, patient and happy to teach! Totally worth the $139 lesson. I will love to do it again!

I decided to do the flyboard at Jan Thiel. The instructor, Wim (I hope I am spelling his name correctly) was an awesome instructor. Very patient and a very good communicator. He was able to explain the mechanics of the flyboard in such a way that made perfect since while I was learning in the water. He also watched what I was doing very carefully and was able to instruct me on what I was doing wrong and what I needed to do to get better - all in a non-condescending manner. In 45 minutes, I was up in the air and comfortable. Now, to all you who may be thinking this is an "extreme" sport" (yes you Marriott staff) - it is far less extreme than wake-boarding. Crashing in the water did not hurt a bit (unlike surfing or wake boarding), and was actually funny at times. In short, looking back at experience, I believe it is so safe that I will talk my 65 year mother into trying it next time (she used to ski but cannot anymore) and I will definitely have my kids on the board when we go back. In my opinion, this is one of the best new experiences available and you do feel like Iron Man. When I get off the plane when we go back, Jan Thiel will be the first place to go because it is the only place on the island to go flyboarding. Also, when you are done with the experience, the beach has a great bar to celebrate the experience (Zanzibar if I recall the name), awesome huts/beds/chairs on the beach, and great shops (my wife loved the shops and spent a bunch of money there). So while one of your family members is being instructed, there are MANY other things for everyone else to be doing. Since this is not offered at ANY of the hotels, I think they need to know that they lost a good amount of indirect revenue as well. :-) - Christian

As experienced cruisers, we researched activities at each port on TripAdvisor prior to our vacation (Carnival Freedom, by the way). We never book shore excursions through the cruise line because they charge far too much money and they don't always offer the most fun activities you can find in a particular destination. Case in point: Zapata Flyboard Caribbean.

The reviews were all good. Even though about half were written in Dutch, we trusted the ratings. I'm glad we did! After checking out the posts and videos on the company's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/zapataflyboardcaribbean), the decision was fairly easy to make to contact the company and book a visit. I did so through Facebook, which proved to be a very effective and easy way to do it.

Within 24 hours of sending my initial private message to Zapata Flyboard, I got a very friendly response from Stijn, who I believe is the owner of the operation. He was absolutely accommodating and extremely friendly. Booking was a piece of cake! Since I explained I was coming from a cruise ship, Stijn offered maximum flexibility in terms of timing since he knew cruise ships are sometimes late. That came in handy as we arrived about 20 minutes after the agreed upon time.

The only downside to the visit was the fact that Jan Thiel Beach, where Zapata Flyboard is located, is far from the cruise port. It took about 1/2 hour to get there in a taxi and the round-trip fare was US $60. But it honestly was 100% worth it. Our taxi driver actually waited for us for the hour we were there, but if you have some extra time I highly recommend spending more time at Jan Thiel Beach. It's just beautiful.

When we got there, Wim and two other members of the team were waiting for us and immediately began doing some dry-land training with our 14-year-old son. Within minutes he was suited up and in the water. Wim couldn't have been nicer and all were about as friendly as can be. The fact that there were three people out in the water with our son set our minds at ease in the event that anything went wrong. Nothing did, but there was plenty of support just in case.

Seriously, our son had the most amazing time flyboarding. It was really easy for him to learn, and he spent a lot of time just having the time of his life.

When they got back in after about 50 minutes in the water we paid, thanked everyone and were on our way.

We had so much fun, and the staff were so incredibly friendly, that we made a strong recommendation to our cruise ship's shore excursion staff to consider offering flyboarding as an option.

Thanks to TripAdvisor, Zapata Flyboard and its wonderful staff, our visit to Curacao was a highlight of the entire trip!
