Trekking in the Viñales Valley

google
This visit allows you to enjoy the beautiful views of the Viñales Valley, while walking, and also at the different stops, you can see how different products of the area are made, with the characteristic tobacco and coffee plantations. You will have the opportunity to taste the authentic Cuban cigar, coffee, honey or rum typical of the "Guayabita del Pinar" area. We will continue to the cave of silence (optional), where we will make a visit, and finally you can relax at the lake where you will have free time to bathe, and eat something in the restaurant that is in the area, where you can enjoy charcoal food , as a specialty, or something to snack on, if they wish. Later, we will return to the beginning of the route.

Not one of the highlights of our Cuba trip - we left quite depressed after seeing the bad shape that many of the animals are in... some of the Crocodiles had quite dramatic injuries to their bodies (limbs missing, even parts of their snouts and jaws ripped off)... probably due to so many of them being forced to live in such narrow confinement, constant fighting for the small spot near the fence where the tourists “feed” them (for money of course) a small slice a rotten meat... very sad spectacle to see indeed... would I visit this place again? Never ever!

I need to clarify that we are not professional birdwatchers, nor photographers. We've just read a few amazing reviews (here mostly) and decided to visit the place. Nature itself is lovely (minus the mosquitos), I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy it but we've had a terrible experience with the people. Since we weren't aware of the opening hours of this place, we've arrived here on our way to Trinidad, around 4 pm. We've stopped just for a second to see which way are we supposed to drive when a young man already tried to open our car telling us that he is a guide there and showing us some kind of a certificate. There were six of us (two cars), his "brother" was already trying to do the same (get into the car of our friends) with the same talk. They've convinced us that they were licenced guides for this visit and said that they will take us to see the birds, even though the place is closed by now. We didn't know what to do exactly since it all happened so fast. The next thing we know is that we are going into the park by car for a double price (CUC 25 per person), not knowing if we actually want this but the situation was presented by them as if they were "helping" us all of sudden. The place was full of mosquitos, one more guide came along (!!!) and there were very few flamingoes very far away. We've managed to see maybe a few more birds when they've rushed us out because the sun was about to set. That's when a whole bus arrived as well. Into the closed park. In the end, they asked for another CUC 5 per person, cause they've brought another guide to "help" us and also demanded that we drive them to the highway. I cannot describe how uncomfortable the whole situation was. It has ruined everything that was supposed to be a nice experience. Watch out for people like these and be smarter than we were.

There is an error in this listing. the Cienaga de Zapata is in Giron, not Varadero. At the Cienaga de Zapata, there's a Crocodile refuge, which tour buses go to. You can see Cuba's unique species of crocodile, which is small & see the other larger types in a pond. As for the Parque Nacional and walking tours, there are at least 4 different sites, each in different directions. It's a protected area so a guide should accompany you. In Playa Larga, there's a gate off the highway at the entrance to the village and a small office with the name, Cienaga de Zapata - Parque Nacional. They can arrange guided tours & they have a map to explain the different types of tours. It's CUC 15 per person just to enter. The guide is on top of that. There are 3 bird watching tours, 2 from Playa Larga. The guide/taxi will take you to the start. A homestay/casa particular knows guides & transport, also. Transport (could be a horse cart) is about CUC 25-35 depending on which tour you choose. Here are some: Salinas de Brito - excellent for aquatic birds. It's 20 Km from Playa Larga. About 3 hours. Refugio de Aves de Soprilar - birds that are endemic to Cuba. About 2.5 hours Refugio de Aves de Bermejas - birds that are endemic to Cuba. About 2.5 hours, accessible from Playa Giron Enigma de las Rocas - Walk into the trees & there's a lovely cenote, where you can go swimming, snorkelling or even diving. Many tours come here, so it can get noisy but if you're there before or after, it's very pleasant. There's a restaurant, pay parking & a bathroom.

Not sure this is the same trip but it was in Gran Parque Natural Montemar, near Playa Giron. We arranged the trip through our casa, Hostal Luis. We were picked up at 9:00 am in a horse and cart and taken a little way out of the town. There we met a guide and formed a group with others. The guide spoke good English. The trail was over rocky ground so wear sturdy shoes. We saw trees, bromeliads, a bat cave, a boa constrictor in a cave, two cenotes, and a little crocodile in a swamp. We got to swim in the second cenote. I had brought my snorkel and mask so could see the sheer walls and some little fish. Take your swim suit, towel and water. We were back in Playa Giron by 12:30 pm. It was a lovely morning.
