A large fortress with magnificent views. It has been very well preserved and I loved how it still had the long chute for the cannonballs to be rolled down ready for use. There is also a small museum area with a good local guide who will tell you about the history of the place (in Spanish, so have a translator handy).
This was a thoroughly enjoyable visit and - for me - the best fort to see in Cuba. There is also a lighthouse area nearby and a good restaurant and, of course, many shops/stalls on the approach too.

Castle high on a rock above the sea. Beautiful view of the sea and across the bay to the mountains. The best place for me in the south of Cuba

The castle-fortress guarded the entrance to the bay. As you walk towards it there are plenty of sellers. there is an interesting museum and after passing through it you get wonderful views from the fortress.

I enjoyed my visit to this historical landmark which is not badly maintained. I was a bit harassed by the vendors at the entrance... but that is Cuba

We were so lucky to still find it open. LP says it closes at 7 pm, but they have changed the schedule recently, and closes now at 5! They tolds us we could stay until 5.30, so we had the sunset there, which was marvellous. The view is amazing, and the fortress is quite impressive. You can try to hitchhike, get a bus (truck) or take a taxi (around 20 CUC return).

It was the first thing we saw entering Santiago de Cuba harbor and it's kinda hard to miss, so on our 2nd day there and with a car and guide at our disposal we had to pay it a visit. If it were to cost to get in for a self-guide tour I can't say how much as it was included as part of our tour with Out of the Box tours.

With it's many cascading levels of stone staircases it is not handicapped accessible.

There are gift shops and restaurants that take advantage of its' drawing power on the way to the fort. Like the fort they offer commanding views of the sea and harbor. Parking is sparse and away from the fort so your walk will begin there. Once across the ramp over the dry moat there is little in the way of exhibits or recreation of the fort in its heyday.

I don't recall having to pay to take photos but if I did, it being Cuba, it would have been a small amount and worth it- less than $5 I believe.

Your legs will get a work out on the steep stone steps if you want to see all the different levels in the fort.

It's not El Morro in San Juan Puerto Rico when it comes to firing your imagination with representations of how the troops manning the fort in war times lived. They were likely more comfortable than any hostile sailor in a wooden ship trying to survive a barrage from this massive multi-level cannon platform. I am including some photos taken from the sea as our cruise ship left the harbor so you can imagine how intimidating it would have been trying to get past this mighty fortress....

An impressive fortress built to protect the entrance to the Santiago harbour that has been restored to its original splendour. Beyond a doubt it is a must see location when visiting the city.
