Once I discovered this place, I could not stay away. Located right in the middle of the commercial heart of this city. it is in a huge, remodeled and renovated 18th cty. single story mansion and is run by Orestes Larios-Zaak, an internationally known and shown local painter with an oeuvre spanning 41 years and several important awards including a UN prize for his efforts to promote conservation through his art. His original paintings go from $3000.00 CUC to $8.00 (biz-card sized), he also has gorgeous silk-screened and printed bags and purses. In addition you will find 5 more galleries under this one roof. The building has very high ceilings and lots of light and breeze. To the left as you enter there is a large gallery room where local artists get a free, one month show, to the left is Mr. Larios-Zaak showroom which is also used for the weekly practice sessions of Camagüey's Classical String Orchestra and their monthly concerts. In front, and beyond the left-side gallery is an amazing and original Moorish Arch over 4 steps that lead into a smaller salon or vestibule where you see photos of Orestes and his awards on two walls plus sundry paintings and ceramic sculpture by various local artists. Beyond is the open air courtyard which leads to more galleries. To the Left is Romelio Paez's gallery/workshop, he turns metal junk into wonderful sculpture, welds and fixes anything, runs a full smithy, makes/invents his own tools and wows everybody that sees his stuff. I got 8 pieces by him, I just could not resist and would had taken more if luggage space/weight had not been a concern. Against the back wall beyond the courtyard were 3 galleries. On the far left a general collection of paintings, wood sculpture and ceramics by a dozen accomplished, local artists; to the right it is the workshop of Gregorio who specializes in exotic wood sculpture and has an inner gallery with paintings, wood and ceramic pieces, knick-knacks, crafts and trinkets by his friends and he is not too proud to turn down commercial work. To the right of that is the fully functional toilet, a thing to look forward to in Cuba. The place is a hub for local artists and students, in addition, fine art and drawing classes at all levels are held here during the summer season. Please, don't miss out on this truly amazing Art Center
