On one of our last days in Havana (many years ago), my little boy and I managed to catch a kids' performance at Teatro America in Havana. The building itself is so cool, with a giant map on the floor and a nostalgic look that's hard to capture with new builds. The show was super cute. We didn't know how to buy tickets in advance, and couldn't even find a list of dates and times, so one day when walking by, we asked a security guard and he told us when to return. He even let us look around inside the building on that day, though there was no performance. When we returned, we stood in the queue but the tickets were sold out but. Fortunately, the guards offered to let us (clears throat) buy VIP tickets for $20 and so were escorted to a balcony that was not in use so we could watch the show. I'm fairly sure that was a gringo special but... we didn't really care. We really enjoyed the kids and there cool costumes, as well as the silly songs and dance. And even though we didn't understand the comedy bits, we laughed with the audience. The theater is something to see. The kids' show was a nice touch of local culture. It wasn't spectacular but my 4-year-old loved it... and so did I. I'm sure the adult shows are better for most audiences. We'll definitely be back! (If you go, search for Casa Guillama on FB for a homestay room rental. It is just down the street from America theater. They are the nicest family ever and your room has its own bathroom, entrance, and key for a very good price.)

This place is amazing. We seemed to be the only foreigners at the shows we went to. The first was a few years back and the sound system kept blowing up in between and during acts. The second time we went the place had been refurbished slightly and the sound system had been renewed. It is like a 50s cinema, amazing. The Cubans were dancing, cheering and standing during the finale. Amazing show worthy of the West End in London. Please note i had to pay 5cuc to get in but because my husband is black he was able to blag 5 cuban pesos!

This beautiful 1941 building was the original air conditioned movie theater in Havana. It's grand art deco design is similar to the Radio City Music Hall. With swooping levels reaching out to the stage, this is a fantastic building. There were no programs during our stay so I can't speak to the acoustics. But the visual is superb! We were lucky enough to score a private tour. Fabulous. And the Ladies Lounge was like a trip into movie-land. A bit tattered, it still shouted for Joan Crawford.
