Basement jazz club. The real thing. Quite modern music the night we visited, not copying 50s US jazz or the conventional Afro Cuban jazz of Gillespie, Valdes, Dorham, Tito Puente, etc. The pianist had great jazz chops all the same ...
Entry was cheaper in pesos, but not very expensive in $ or Euro (five or ten?)

This is a small jazz club we discovered thanks to indications by Oscar, a fantastic host from Vapor 156 guest house and once we attended it we repeated the rest of nights before leaving. Every day there are different musicians and groups acting and it is really great as the quality of music performances was of high standard. The owners maybe a little nasty if you do not have cuban pesos as they apply the official change if you pay in euros (this may have changed due to the recent official change harmonisation done by the government on Aug. 12). Cocktails are not great but the music much compensates these shortages. A must see, fully safe and recommended activity!

We arrived a little early and the establishment was very gracious in letting us in and giving us a place to sit. The show with a few Cuban Jazz artists started on time. The music was awesome and the interplay between the artists great to see. The drinks were an adventure for us .... some first timers like coke+wine ... hmm now that may be an acquired taste :-)

We read on TA good reviews, so decided to go to La Zorra y el Cuervo. A real Jazz Club. We had to pay CUC 15 because a special band will perform that night. So okay, fair. We were not even in our seat yet and had to order the first drink! (two are in the prise). At the same moment they gif us a kind of menu card to order something to eat, hmmmm strange.

Before the band started we met there an Canadian couple who know a lot about the Jazz scene and the band that would perform. So we where very excited about this, and felt like the lucky ones. But when the band got on stage, the Canadian woman says, “this is not the band who should play this evening”. They came especially for this band! The band cancelled the last minute, so they wanted the money back and went. Again hmmm, at the moment that we payed, La Zorra y el Cuervo know this already!! But…when the band gif us great evening, its okay.

The band started to play, it was more like a Yeahe Yoho is every body happy!! That is not what we expected, we expected more like a band who play good Jazz. During the break they came to us, to let us buy their CD. It was so commercial, create an ambiance, drink/eat a lot an buy a CD. If they had given a pure and beautiful performance, without Yeaheh Yoho, we would have stayed longer and would have bought the CD ourselves. We stayed four nights in Havana, been in various places and have seen better performances.

Sorry, for us it was a disappointment

Yet another legendary venue fell victim of COVID. It is open, but there is no more live music. From the conversation with staff it is not known whether live music will return to this place anytime soon. Too bad.

I was in Havana for the annual Plaza Jazz Festival and extended an evening at La Zorra y el Cuervo. The basement club opens at about 10pm. It is an cozy space with a small stage that is perfect for Jazz groups. The 10CUC cover includes 2 drinks. The Mojitos are quite good!

On the Friday night nephew and wife arrived n Havana , we went to La Zorra and El Cuervo Jazz Club on Calla 23 in Vedado. This is a basement club in the hipster jazz tradition with limited seating, maybe 150 people. We queued in a long line even though we got there at 10:10 pm and the doors do not open until ten. Almost all tourists and clearly several professional musicians from other countries. Unlike a number of other venues, this was an audience serious about hearing jazz and not about getting selfies. Blessedly, no smoking in the club.

Barely made it into the door and were told we’d have SRO only. I doubt ten more people got in after us. After about 20 minutes though, the doorman came up and moved us a table right on the bandstand. Apparently some VIPs did not show up so we got their seats. Buen suerte.

The star was a bi lingual Cuban diva, young, black, and obviously very hip. Multiple CDs .The band had just come off a tour of Europe and North America. I am utterly embarrassed to not know her name. The band included keyboard, trumpet sax bass and two percussions - traditional Cuban and trap set.

The music was wild, very driving , very melodic but with tough rhythms and transitions. Lots of hints of rhumba. The singer had a great range and did sounds that I have a never heard a voice make. Percussion section was incredible. Highlight: one percussionist performed on only the triangle for ten minutes — I had no idea you could make a triangles interesting.

Difference: My nephew pointed out , “ They are all showing that they are having a great time together. Jazz is never this “fun” in the states.” Band leader said .. “Come on - I have been around the world and you tell me Habana is the first city where people aren’t gonna get to their feet and start dancing?” First time in a long time I have heard a jazz band say that.

This government run jazz club is a Havana institution. "The Fox and the Crow" is located on La Rampa (23rd) between Calle N and O close to the Hotel Nacional and the Habana Libre. The club is down a flight of stairs from the street. The atmosphere is intimate...a low stage right beside the tables and a bar at the back of the room. The acoustics are great and the bands are usually hot. The manager and doormen speak English and can provide you with a schedule of who will be playing that month and also opinions on who are the hottest groups. Sometimes International musicians will turn up to jam. I caught one of these sessions when Walter Blanding Jr. and a few others from the Wynton Marsalis tour blew it out with the locals. 10 CUC's with a couple of drinks included.

Recommended to go by our host and we really enjoyed.
Doesn't really start till about 10pm and there are different musicians playing every night.
Entry fee of 10cuc when we went but that included two cocktails.
We had a great night and it was interesting listening to Cuban Jazz.
Interesting place s you look like you are entering a telephone box and the go downstairs.

Great songs, great music, great singers. Can't ask for more. Arrive early so you can find a seat. Drinks only fair, but the music soon takes over and you will have a great time. The rendition of "Lagrimas Negras" was the best.
