Yes you should visit this plaza and visit the Cathedral and look around to buildings around it.
But to crowded and too many local sale people who want to sell a tour or get you into a restaurant.
Don't miss the fat lady with sigar :-(

This is a place you really should check out in Havana. The church is gorgeous, albeit a bit dark inside. The plaza is filled with colourful characters. If you take photos of a person ask first and give them a few bucks. It's a wild wee area of Old Havana.

While hundreds of tourists line up at the bar nearby.. few spend quality time in this beautiful plaza! Don't make that mistake.. enjoy this beautiful place and it will draw you in. I am not a religious guy but I would stop by the church on many days just to reflect on life.. there are many restaurants nearby that are amazing.. my favorite one was Genesis.. basically they say once you eat the food here.. you are reborn a Cuban as you fall in love with the taste! I don't know about being reborn a Cuban part but I definitely fell in love with the food.. and there is free WiFi which is rare in restaurants at this price point.

The cathedral square is the one that gives way to colonial Havana. It is recommended to enter and take a look at the cathedral, it is austere but beautiful, you can take the opportunity to buy chivirico, churros or roasted peanuts on the street. Be very careful with the people who are ordering, if you are careless you will find yourself surrounded and you will not have a good experience.

In Cuba vultures are called
Tiñosas , for it is what is all over Havana Cubans who try to swindle tourists even with threats if you do not give them help Inside the trash of the city and its decline shines the large stately buildings that are still in good condition as well as the old square. Havana is dead, no tourism except Russians and some Canadian

The main feature of this square is the historic cathedral. When you look at the cathedral you realize the two towers are different sizes. The reason the one on the left is smaller is because they realized it would extend to far into the adjacent alley and had to make it smaller than the right one!

Do not miss out on this one....it's a must see and once you enter the Cathedral you will instantly appreciate the architecture and preservation that has been put into it.
The square around the Cathedral is equally impressive and surrounded by a lot of restaurants and points of interest.
This is just one of many jewels in Old Havana!

The Plaza de la Catedral is beautiful. It was built in the 1700's. However, only one tower was built at that time. Many years later, the second tower on the left in this picture was built. As you can see, it is not as wide as the tower on the right side of the picture. By that time a street had been added beside the Catedral so the clock tower had to be a bit narrower. The plaza is a wonderful place to visit along with the church and there are several restaurants worth having lunch or dinner.

There are a few important squares in old Havana and this one is the most elegant of them. The beautiful cathedral is the highlight of the square but all the houses around are also very special and beautiful. It was very prestigious to live in this square so the richest and the most privileged families lived here. Now it is a touristic place with cafes and restaurants. The prices are therefore higher than in other places.

A must visit, Old Havana, with its buildings of the time in very good condition. The Cathedral in particular with its square and the buildings around it dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Beautiful building with its frescoes of decorations. To visit imperatively.

Mass: 7:15am Mon, Fri in the adjoining chapel; 8:15pm Tues, Thu; 5:30pm Sat; 10:30am Sun.

Will be in the area on a Sunday late afternoon-evening. Can we go inside? Don't want to disturb Mass but didn't know if that was only in the morning.
Written January 5, 2019
While I was there Mass was not going on. I'm sure that your tour guide will inform you whether there will be mass or if you are allowed in during that time. The tour is usually a few hours so even if when you pass by and mass in going on, by the end of the tour it will be over.

How close is the pier to the Plaza? We are arriving on a cruise ship from Florida and are not sure whether we want to take a shore excursion or walk around town on our own.
Thanks for all input - it will certainly be appreciated.

Once you disembark you'll want to walk rather than take a tour. There are interesting lanes to walk along which will lead to the cultural centre of Havana. I enjoyed walking along the waterfront and the ferry terminal is also close by which takes you to the OLd Fort. I'm sure that maps will be available at the terminal--- but you could pick up a bicycle "taxi",a horsedrawn carriage, or a big convertible taxi, at the terminal, Cubans mostly all speak English and love to help tourists discover the best of their Capital City.
There are also "all day on/off buses "with a tourist guide.which give you a taste of the spots you'd like to visit.
Whatever, wherever you visit will be enjoyable--- the architecture is magnificent but renovations are constantly in place - with great expertise - but do create dust, Enjoy your visit We certainly did.
