These slave huts are a bitter reminder of the Caribbean slave past. Slaves were imported from Africa and other Caribbean countries to work on salt mining in Bonaire.
Driving south (around half an hour) from Kralendijk this is the second set (yellow) of slave huts after the first white ones - unbelievable that 5 or 6 people lived in such low and tiny huts.

Not much info for the casual tourist who stops by but not with a tour or guide. The huts are reasonably well preserved but there isn't much else here. We stopped on our whirlwind golf cart tour of the South Island. Wish they would provide info on the history, use etc. which would add to the visit.

According to two 'official' guides these 'slave huts' we never used to house hundreds of people. They say that the narrative for the 'slave huts' has been changes from reality over the past decades as to be mostly untrue.

I am pleased Bonaire has kept the slave huts built for slaves as it is a poignant reminder for those unfortunate people who were forced to work on the Salt Flats. The slaves would have to walk a 6 hour round trip to work and the huts were built so they did not have to walk the distance daily. They got one day off a week to visit their families and the 6 hours that they spent walking each day was then 6 mores hours a day they had to work at the salt flats. People who say it just takes a few minutes to visit should sit down on the beach and think about what those people endured all those years ago. We spent one hour there reflecting on the past wrongdoings.

Great place for photos and to see the history on the slave huts for the salt harvests. Can be very windy here. Great for kite flying

Just drive out and crawl in to one of these. No guides. No guides needed. Just imagine you live there along with ten other people. Yah the view is to die for.... but that is not what is killing you.

I am not sure what to write about this site. On the one hand I agree with others that there is not a great deal to see here but this place represents more than that. Its not meant to be an amazing looking must see place its, in my opinion to remind us of times gone by. To give us a brief glimpse into history and the people who used to occupy these tiny huts. I think the Bonaire people are not in your face with their history, they are more subtle than that. If you are in the area just stop and think for a while. Whatever comes into your head. Thats why this pace is here.

The idea of sleeping in these tiny huts in the height of summer fill me with horror. The tragedy of slavery is very apparent on Bonaire and they don't sugar coat it.

Interesting part of the island history, slavery, and how the slaves lived at that time. Good area next to the ocean.

An interesting stop to see the slave hugs and get information on how they helped with the salt industry on the island.
