Time of year
The trip to Pekelmeer is just breathtaking especially on a sunny day with the pink salt ponds on one side and so many shades of blue in the sea just cross the road. The southern lagoon gets yet other intriguing blue-green shades and if you are lucky to see flamingos they will do…
If your doing the South of Bonaire drive, this is worth the stop but youmcant get close for good pics. We found them in the most southern part by the lighthouse and also on the eastern side of the reserve. There are over places on the island though if you want to see them more…
So wonderful to ride through and see the pink water, and the glorious flamingos. Well worth the ride--and bring binoculars, as the birds are skitterish, and the area is a nature sanctuary.
Pink Water!!! Totally unexpected and incredibly beautiful The colors of the Carribbean are amazing! We saw hundreds of flamingos along the way. The experience was priceless!
This was one of the stops on my Bonaire tour. It is a beautiful lake, however, the history behind the area is deplorable. slaves were brought there to mine the salt flats and they were treated horribly. I did learn that the lake is pink due to the salt rich bacteria there.
