The Savannah is an area of land about 1 mile from Bridgetown once used by the British forces station in Barbados as a parade ground. After the troops withdrew to Britain in1905, the property became devoted to sports of various kinds including rugby and soccer games.
Where the British officers once raced their horses, in1845 became the home of The Garrison Savannah horse racecourse. Which is worth a visit if you are in this part of town and would like to take part in live gambling

TIP: if you do not wish to pay the entry fee there is around the whole race track a small white fence making it very convenient to stand and watch the horses run by, perfect for those of you on a budget.
I would apricate a thumbs up below if you found this review informative. Thank you

The horse racing experience not to be missed. Prices of entry vary according to your needs. Lovely lunch from the restaurant. The bar and outside terraces are quick to serve and the betting kiosks are available throughout the course. Grandstand seats are not essential as viewing the race is easy around the perimeters. The horses are beautiful but the stall handlers take a while to install them into the starting stalls. Races are every half hour. You must show evidence of vaccination against Covid on arrival. Grandstand entry is 50 Barbados dollars. A great day out.

We bought tickets in the grandstand a few days in advance at the ground. BBD 25pp and was worth doing as we were able to choose our seats and were told which ones were in the shade. You have to have photo ID and proof of vaccination to enter. Mixture of locals and tourists.

Easy to place bets, minimum bet of BBD 2. Not clear what odds you are getting though, but didn’t bother us as we weren’t betting big.
Food and drink offering is ok but a bit limited and long queues. Ice cream was good.

You could technically watch the race without paying by standing at the far end of the course, but you would miss the excitement, betting and shade.

Thoroughly recommend for an afternoon out.

I had a lovely day at the races on Saturday. Beautifully bred horses, good organisation of the venue, good music and vibe. Stands are sheltered and cool. Nice bar and restaurants serving local and international food. I dressed up for the occasion, but saw many patrons in casual dress. Went solo as a single lady and had a lovely time while my family relaxed by the pool. Bliss.

Had a blast in the Gold Cup Village on the savanna at the 2023 Sandy Lane gold cup although their could have been a wider selection of food and drink. The gold champagne 🥂 glasses were a hit until they ran out and it became a huge miss at one particular kiosk along with the Photo Booth (technical difficulties) but the desserts made up for the disappointments somewhat. That and navigation of a bet which yielded positive results. Glad I went with friends and met new acquaintances, a BIG WIN 🏆

We came here with our Taxi driver to check out the track. There were no races however we saw the horses in the horse stalls. It is a beautiful race track, they have races every other week over the weekends and I am certain this is a great experience. It is an open concept field therefore even if you don’t come on the premises you can see the race from the main streets around. I question how hot it may get for the horses since this is Barbados and I hope the horses are kept in cool places when they are not racing.

This was a brilliant day out away from the sunbeds.. and we even managed to back a few winners!

If you are looking for something different than the catermerans and island tours I would definitely recommend the races at the Garrison!

The prices are extremley good value:

VIP seats in the gradstand are around $20 (barbados) apx £6.50pp

We booked day memberships in advance of arriving in barbados direct with the Barbados Turf club for $100 (barbados) apx £35.

For this we had seats in the air conditioned Members lounge which is located in the high in the grandstand near the finishing line. The box has floor to ceiling windows giving guests unrestricted views of the track. Access to the lounge also includes complimentary teas and coffees, sandwiches, cakes, soup etc. Prices on the bar where very good value too at around $10 barbados for 2x rum and cokes apx £3.50.

The Garrison race track is also a heritage site having been the site of the English garrison back in the colonial period. There are many beautiful buildings and old armourments to explore around this area.

Yip..it's that time of year soon in Barbados! The biggest racing event this side of the Caribbean sets off at the Garrison Savannah. It's close to the city and quite easy to find along the south coast road. If you love horses, like to try local foods and enjoy lots of spirits... then you will fit right in here. Great family day op too. It's an all-day affair though. You can either sit in the stands or relax around the perimeter of the track...take your chairs!

We stayed at the Hilton and found out about the Saturday afternoon races by accident. Nobody at the Hilton could tell us when they start but I chatted to one of the grooms that take the horses for a swimm on Carlisle beach ho had the information.
Race day is a great experience, I won a few bets, not by studying the race card but by betting on the horses with pink! Bridles. They are owned by a local trainer who has many winners! Beer is cheap and going to the races is a great way to mix with the locals and experience a side of Barbados most tourists never see.

Well here was something completely different. We had bussed from Holetown to Bridgetown then walked to the Garrison. We had never been to a race meeting here and were really pleased with the laid back experience. We had lunch from the stalls outside, cheap and good and were treated to a great days entertainment at the races. Do have a seat in the grand stand and do have a fun bet. Between the two of us we bet $110 Bajan and won $90 Bajan over 6 races Great fun and excitement for the equivalent of £7. Very unpretentious experience amongst some great local people and a bus directly back to Holetown on the Oistins to Speightstown yellow bus.
