Smatt's Cycle started off by saying they don't want to rent to tourists that have never ridden a scooter because of recent high profile accidents. I fit into the newby category. That said they allowed me to fill out all the paperwork and pay, then gave me a 5 minute class/test outside right next to a busy road. Needless to say I did not pass and they denied me. No biggy, I understand. Just the way it all played out was not my cup of tea. They are right next to the Princess Hotel so easy to find.

My husband and I were initially bummed that the Twizzys were all booked in advance, but we ended up being really glad that was the case because we otherwise would not have rented scooters. This was our first time driving one, but the younger guy who walked us through the instructions was helpful and we ended up having a blast. Would definitely rent again. The only drawback was that the scooter seemed to be struggling to make it up hills, though this may have more to do with the size of the engine in comparison with the motorcycles and cars that were passing us.

Yes...the scooters are pricey and yes...my scooter did not have a properly working speedometer or brakes for that matter...BUT...the service was great, the little lesson at the beginning was helpful and the day was so much fun touring all over Bermuda. It is the best way to get around and see everything. Plus....I have scootered twice in my life and both times in Bermuda. Love it!

There are lots of other scooter rental companies on Bermuda, there is absolutely no reason you should ever have to rent a scooter from this one. In short, a very curt, unpleasant gentleman rented us an incredibly old scooter, which broke down within one mile. We then had to wait for the one other staff member to bring us another incredibly old scooter. When I requested one with non-squeaking brakes, I was informed that all the scooters have squeaky brakes. Our second scooter successfully made it around the island, but with minimal pickup and dodgy, squeaky brakes requiring an abnormally long stopping distance. If this was your only option on the island, that would be fine, but we had actually rented an Oleander scooter two days before that was brand new, had great pickup, and cost the exact same amount. If we had only read the reviews, we would have walked the few extra blocks into town and would have rented from Oleander's Hamilton location. They probably would have also delivered the scooter to the Hamilton Princess for no additional cost, as they had delivered it to the Loren a few days before. We won't make the same mistake twice.

Bikes are far too expensive for their age and condition. They only have one type of one-seater, and one type of two-seater. The individual who served me was abrupt and almost dismissive. This service was a problem especially because it was in response to a genuine concern about the state of the bike. The brakes were loose and squeaky. I expressed this to the gentleman, and he said they were "all pretty much the same". He hastily allowed me to test another bike, but that one was even worse!
I only went to Smatt's in the first place because the fabulous Mrs. Thomas of Elbow Beach Cycles was all booked up... seemingly for good reason!

I rented one and it would die at every stop and then the light was not bright enough to use the scooter after dark -- absolutely dangerous to do so.
I switched to another bike that would stay running but lights situation was the same. Also picked up with a front flat tire.
If you want a poorly maintained scooter that you have to waster your time telling them to fix or a bike you cant drive safely after dark, Smatts is the place for you.
There are other rental companies on island with new bikes that will deliver to you.
Have a Bermudiful Day

The owner (or manager) is a miserable dude. Condescending. Also, the scotters are beat up, slow. Location is great (if staying at the Fairmont). Next trip, I'll find a beter place to rent

I was served by a chap aged in his fifties or sixties, with a bushy white moustache, and what sounded like a Dutch accent, who was condescending and combative. When he asked whether I had experience riding a scooter I replied by stating that I possessed a full motorcycle licence, to which he in turn responded by saying that that didn't mean I knew how to ride a motorcycle. I proposed to him that in order to possess a full motorcycle licence one, assuredly, had to have had experience riding one. He then proceeded to argue that pilots could be trained on simulators without having flown an aircraft. This exchange was all very odd and completely pointless. In short, this pugnacious old goat really ought to be put out to pasture.
As for the scooter, likewise, had it seen better days. Though, in the interest of fairness, despite its squeaking brakes and temperamental fuel gauge, it did start every time and took me around the island just fine.

The guy at the counter was personable enough to make the rental process easy enough, but opted to provide us with a scooter that should not be on the road - these bikes are well past their usable life, but if they insist for whatever reason to keep renting them out, no way should they be priced as all the other, newer, SAFER bikes at the shops around the island.
The gas gauge didn't work, and the explanation we got was that inside, it gets too hot, that the pieces may stick together or melt and not work properly. Ok. Wish we were told that upon renting, since we detoured out of our way to find a gas station, only for the attendant to attempt a fill-up and tell us there's plenty of gas in there. Just what one needs while on vacation.
Also the speedometer cut out a few times.
We had another biker point out that our back tire needs air, while whizzing past us at 30 MPH on the road.
The instrument display: condensed water inside - old, old, old.
The headlights: so fogged up from age that they were worthless for nighttime driving.
The brakes: loud, metal-on-metal squealing every time i braked, though the shopkeeper assured us it's not a safety issue and due to asbestos removal from the brake lines. Fine. Other than the panels hanging off the body, it got us around. I'd probably rent from a different shop, or negotiate a rate that would be more in-line with a bike that should be essentially put out to pasture.

We rented a single and a double scooter while we were in Bermuda. During our stay we ran into an issue of the one scooter not starting. Within 15 minutes they met us with another scooter and sent us on our way.
