What a lovely, relaxing, and moving experience visiting the Butterfly Farm was. In one week, I went twice, once to see what it was about -- and listen to a short talk on butterflies (the tour of about 20 minutes) and once again at the crack of dawn (7 a.m.) to see butterflies emerge from their chrysalises.
There is a little coffee and drink shop, and inside where you pay the $16 for the visit (so worth it and it covers return visits while you are in Aruba) is also a little shop of butterfly things that you don't find anywhere else. Inside the gardens are native plants and flowers, a koi fish pond, benches, little "shelters" holding chrysalises, another fish pond, and a thousand butterflies. Two pretty blue and white parakeets also make their home there.
Returning for the emerging butterflies in the morning was so worth it, too. The owner, Tony, is a scientist and speaks rapidly and comprehensively about so many thing I never knew about that were fascinating. Even the children listened with rapt attention.
I can't wait to return and bring my 6 year old granddaughter. She would be delighted.

We stopped at The Butterfly Farm on a very hot afternoon. The heat made it harder to enjoy the visit as it is really humid inside, but the tour guide was really fun and shared interesting info about the garden and the butterflies. Overall, considering the small size of the garden, I think the entry ticket is a bit too pricy but overall is nice experience if you have some free extra time to spend in Aruba

If you appreciate nature, you should stop by. Enjoy the color. The $16 admission is reasonable, you get a good explanation of the life cycle of the butterfly. You can walk there from the Riu and the Hilton. After the tour, you only need another 15-20 mins to walk about and see the gift shop.
Tip: stop by in the morning, apparently the butterflies are more active.

I was initially upset about $16 per person, till the tour started. Joshua (heavy set male with tattoos) gives great detail about the butterflies and will cut jokes along the way, in a very relaxed mannor. Being able to return again for free also makes this a quality outing. (The title indictates what we got to see and the picture proves it)

NOTE - Best to go before 11 am. As we learned, the butterflies start to fade in the afternoon as they become 'drunk' from the nectar intake. In the morning they are flying all over the place. We were there by 9:30 for lots of activity.
Over 20 years old, this butterfly farm is often overlooked by many. Even though we've been to Aruba before, we had not made time for the 'farm.' For about $16 per person, you get a nice personal tour and great 1-hour lesson on butterflies, their life cycle, the little hatcheries, food, and varieties. Seeing them break out of the chrysalis and unraveling their wings - so cool. Many great pics to get...we got so into it that we ended up getting a framed one for our home wall. Nice shop and little refreshment area, too.

We came here at the beginning of our vacation because we had heard you can come back with your one time ticket - it is true. We were asked how long we would be on Aruba and our ticket was made out for the whole duration of our stay! The atmosphere in the garden is so welcoming and relaxing, we went back two days later for a second round and plan to go Friday morning for the hatching!
The tour was very interesting and is offered in different languages. Taking beautiful pictures of the butterflies is very possible because they come quite close. Whenever I thought “now I have seen it all” a new beautiful butterfly turned up!
The constant chirping and gurgling from the resident budgies just adds to the flair.
All in all we spent so much longer here than we ever expected to - it was a great experience!
I would not recommend this with toddlers because of the danger to the butterflies - they can be stepped on easily and should not be touched even if they land on you. So be prepared to carry and constantly watch your child if it is too young to understand this.

The Butterfly Farm is a great place to visit during a trip to Aruba. I have visited several times (your admission tickets allows you repeat visits for the length of your vacation). I love seeing the many types of butterflies flitting around. Sometimes one will even land on you. There is realizing music playing in the background. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and answer all your questions. The tour explains the life cycle of butterflies. They have boxes where the many different chrysalises hang. The gift shop is nice and a small cafe is also there. Outside of the actual butterfly farm are blooming flowers where you can bananaquits and hummingbirds feeding.

The Butterfly Farm was part of a land tour we took. The guide was VERY informative and personable but if you aren't into butterflies, you might be a little bored by it as the presentation got a little long. The facility is also pretty small. So you walk in, listen to about a 20 minute presentation while watching all the butterflies fly around and then you finish walking through it which took maybe another 5 minutes. I am glad it was part of our tour but because it was, I don't know what the cost was and that would be a major deciding factor if i would recommend it. They do say you can come back again free of charge with your ticket but there is not enough to see it twice in my opinion.

What a fun diversion. Takes only a couple of hours, but it was a lot of fun. The staff is soooo in love with butterflies and the butterflies are truly beautiful. To have so many butterflies literally landing on you and checking you out is a real treat. Awesome afternoon fun.,

The butterfly farm is a small attraction, but well worth the time. The staff here are so knowledgable about butterflys, that we learned many things about them we never knew. This summer my backyard will be getting a butterfly bar, lol. I think the entrance fee is a bit steep, but it did give us unlimited visits at no further cost, and we did go back for a second visit.

Are there any tours of the island that include the Butterfly Farm?

I am not sure about tours going in there..may be some little ones do.
SinceThe Butterfly Farm and the island itself are quite small, if you have a car or 4x4, it is so easy to just stop by there an spend may be an hour max to get to see it.
We were not sure how to get there and didn’t have a connection, so we just downloaded Google Maps offline for Aruba and used the navigation like that everywhere.
How much is admission?

Admission is $16, but you can revisit for the whole time you
are in Aruba. They ask what your last day there is and mark your admission ticket. They also have one day that is early morning yoga (6:30 am) in among the butterflies.

When is the best time to visit/ time butterflies are most active? Thank you
Jagfanz7
Jacksonville, FL179 contributions
The butterflies are most active first thing in the morning. As the day wears on the get more and more “drunk” on the sugary nectar they consume. They then become more sluggish and less active. I found this to be a better time for good closeup photos. Your entrance fee is good for anytime and as many times as you’d like to visit during the week!!

How did you get there from the cruise port? I'll be there in a few weeks. TIA

There are two types of buses in Aruba. A small bus (van) that you just stand on the curb and flag down or the large bus that you catch at the depot make sure if you take that large bus that you ask where they will pick you up to return. A taxi from the dock to the butterfly farm is about $11USD and then you just flag down a taxi to return home - there are a lot of them going by all the time.

How far is the butterfly farm from the cruise ship port
HawaiiGirl08
new jersey1,989 contributions
I'm not sure what traffic would be like when the cruise ships arrive but we stayed in a hotel right across from the butterfly farm. When we went to restaurants in the cruise ship area, it was about a 10m drive and about $14.
It such a peaceful place to experience! Hope you enjoy it!
