We spent a delightful day being taken around many historic and geographical sites all over the island. Our guide Bert was amazing - so knowledgeable answering our many, many questions. He pointed out so many things we would have missed. The car was comfortable and air conditioned, so lovely to climb back into after visiting a site. We saw some stunning ocean scenery ( Devils Bridge/Shirley Heights) , fascinating historical sites (Betty’s Hope/The Blockhouse/Nelsons Yard ( some parts of this were closed as it us out of season), and a wonderful drive through the rainforests and mountains. We ate at a great little roadside restaurant with food and drink freshly prepared and very tasty. A great way to get a taste of the whole of the Island.

This trip is highly recommended and was one of the highlights of our holiday. We were a small group of 4 in an air conditioned car. Our driver was so informative, he told us all about the villages we drove through and pointed out things we passed along the way on top of the scheduled landmarks we drove to and stopped at. He stopped lots of times for us to take photographs and answered all of my questions. A lovely lunch was included at Nelson's dockyard and we were also treated to the most delicious sweet pineapple from a little stall on our way around. Our drivers name was Bertie(?). We saw so much of the beautiful Island of Antigua including many beautiful beaches and the hotels that I had considered booking. It is so worth the money to see the island fully rather than just a few popular bits. I feel we have experienced the real Antigua. I booked when there on holiday but could only get the day before we went home, a couple we spoke to who recommended it to us had booked prior to going which is a good idea if you want to plan ahead.

George was our guide, there were 6 from our cruise ship. His van was very comfortable. George was a delight - very intelligent, informative. He answered all our questions and shared his opinions and insights with us. During the tour he gave each couple some fresh pineapple to snack on, as well as coupons for a drink.

We had such a wonderful tour of Antigua during our cruise ship stop recently. George, our tour operator, tailored a tour to the needs of all 12 in our group -- tasting local delicacies, visiting some lovely beaches and enjoying the natural beauty of this island paradise. Lovely island...lovely people.

Antigua island tour

If you're looking for the ultimate island escape, a place that's beyond "been there, done that," then Antigua is the place to be.

The best way to explore this wonderful island is with one of the family run and professional tour guides. Personally I would recommend www.voyagesantigua.com. Voyages Antigua has a unique and original tour for every kind of tourist. Such tours include a historical island tour, the thrilling rain forest tour and the wonderful experience of sailing around the island on a catamaran. These may sound like expensive experiences however Voyages Antigua’s rates are very competitive. If you’re a tourist looking for an independent group or private tour,(as we were, with the age group being 46, 73, 78)then you are guaranteed an exciting and fun filled day with one of their friendly and multi lingual drivers. The drivers do not simply drive you around they are also engaging and are very passionate about their beautiful island. Furthermore your driver will know more than enough local history to keep you interested throughout your tour, or just the right places to go for those looking for exhilaration and thrills. The vehicle we travelled in was modern, clean and very comfortable with air conditioning. They also made provisions for my parents who have limited walking ability and our driver, George, was so courteous and helpful that you are most definitely made to feel comfortable and at ease. The service was outstanding, George has a pleasant nature and not short of a smile for you all day long. I cannot praise my driver Georges (the owner’s son) enough; our first contact was via email to their website www.voyagesantigua.com. Within hours I received my first reply and many more followed keeping us in regular contact. You can also keep in touch with him via face book, George Thomas, which was quite handy for me. Payment for the tour was made in US dollars after we had completed our tour, so there’s no need to worry about paying upfront.

The sun was shining in the port of Antigua when we arrived during November 2010.Our driver George phoned us as soon as our ship had docked. We then met Georges along the broad walk in front of the ships port. Our tour started with a short journey through the busy streets of St John passing by the enormous monument of their famous cricketer Viv Richards. We then went up to the newly built hospital that stands proud on the hill overlooking the port, giving you a wonderful photo opportunity of the ships. After a quick look at the Cathedral, that’s unfortunately in desperate need of renovation, and then the newly built Viv Richards cricket stadium, we continued on our tour. We later stopped to view the old sugar plantation factory that has now been left to fall into disarray, but the government have hopes in the near future to renovate the area. There are also plans to make it a visitor’s site to include a museum about the history of the sugar plantation era. We then travelled into the island passing by the locals colourful, if not at times precarious, looking homes. Some of which stood elevated over the hills and mountain edges, with what looked like stilts to support their structure.

As you explore the island you will see there are stone built remains of the windmills that were used in the sugar production industry. The government has restored some of these, because of the islands history with sugar cane. I believe they are the ones we saw at Betty’s hope open air museum, the overview of the landscape is breath-taking, a must see. As we travelled around the island the sun was beating down enhancing the beauty of the sun soaked beaches,(the island boasts 365 of then one for every day of the year). The sea glistens in a way that calls you into its cool waters. You couldn’t help but stop to feel the soft white sand under your feet, take a quick dip in the waters and have a glass of local rum punch.

Saying the views are spectacular is an understatement. One of the best views can be seen from Shirley Heights, where we firstly watched a short presentation of its history before we went outside .Once outside the fabulous views over the English Harbour took our breath away, it was a pure picturesque scene.

We then took a short drive to the spectacular site of Nelsons Dockyard, which is said to be one of the finest natural harbours in the Caribbean. Furthermore it has now become a National park which houses a quaint museum, a few small tourist shops, a restaurant and a wonderful 5*hotel. The hotel sits alongside the yacht haven for some of the world’s most rich and famous men and women. A scene which is a far cry away from the past when Admiral Nelson used the harbour as a secure home for the British Navy sail ships during the Napoleonic wars.

After visiting the large tourist market area just outside Nelsons dockyard we then continued to the centre of the Antiguan arts community at Harmony Hall, in Brown's Bay at Nonsuch Bay. Here you could view the exhibitions and make a purchase of the handmade/painted local artists items, before sitting outside with a cool beer. Outside there were again breath-taking views all around you whilst you sat eating a delicious Caribbean snack.

Unfortunately it was then time for us to make our way back to the port in St John’s, where we had to sadly say goodbye to our fabulous driver Georges and his wonderful island. Fortunately we plan on returning to the island again with a longer stay so we can see and experience more of the Antiguan culture and sites with no other driver than Georges from www.voyagesantigua.com. We were left with about an hour and half to spare before the ship was ready to leave the port of Antigua. In these last moments we went shopping (of course) in the many port stores next to the dock. With the items being duty free it made the purchases of perfume, cigarettes and jewellery very favourable. This concluded our wonderful tour of Antigua; fortunately the pictures and the memories will always be with us after Antigua the second stop on the 24 day cruise of the Caribbean, which was around the Eastern Caribbean's Leeward Islands.

There are six of us that travel together every year. While we are on an island, we like to hire a local driver to take us around and tell us the history of the island, the politics, the school system, chief industry, etc. On Antigua, we found Akeim Thomas from Baller Taxi Service (I believe he is also know as Baller, so he is self-employed). He was absolutely amazing. We spent 5 hours with him and he took us everywhere on the island. Some common tourist spots and some not. He also took us to one of his favorite restaurants for lunch that served amazing fresh fish, mussels, etc. The cost of the day was $25 per person (not including lunch) which caused us to give him a large tip!!! He is just great and I highly recommend him. He has a van that is very clean, air-conditioned and comfortable.

We saw much of the island. George is so knowledgeable about everything and easily answered all of our questions. He made sure all our needs were taken care of and did everything from speed up our food orders at Turner's Beach by taking our order and serving us to stopping for pictures at unplanned stops. I would echo all the other wonderful comments mentioned on this site. This is a family-owned company and they truly care about providing professional and caring service.
