Nothing was for the turtle's welfare! (It's a long one)
Awful experience. We were sold by the phrase "turtle island", expecting a beautiful white sand beach with no civilisation and a safe haven for turtles (the place you would see with Attenborough narrating), this could not be further from it. I became suspect of the place when our driver told us there was a cafe. You arrive by your "glass bottomed boat" (small window in the bottom) and lead to the turtle sancturay by your boat driver and meet one of the guides. You start off by getting to feed the large adult green turtles who are kept in a small pond they are covered in what looks like scabs and small scrapes. You will be encouraged to feed them and get your photo taken. You are reminded about how the guides are voluteers and do not make money from this place, I do not belive this is the case. You are then shown all the turtles kept in small tanks and constantly reminded how this is all for the turtle and that you will get you adopt and release one if you wish. It is explained like they will only release these turtles if they get adopted and so not for the good of the turtles, surely if it was for conservation they would be released, if healthy, regardless of adoption. You are allowed to hold one, they pretty much shove it in your hands I refused as I was already traumatised by the experience and wanted to leave as soon as I walked up to the place. They had young babies floating around some of which looked to be dead, and others in the tanks were either stuck in the corner or were swimming into the corners out of distress. They have small reptiles, birds and a young lewak locked up in cages. There were iguana of which the guide said are not native but gave no explanation as to why they then had one in a cage. You will be asked to purchase a picture of you feeding the turtles or holding one, again I refused, I wanted no memories of this place. The guide then apologised to the photographer when we refused to buy, which feels like it supports the claim that money made here is not for the welfare of the turtles but for personal gain. They do have a shop with small figurines, knowing I was not going to be "adopting" any at the end some guilt mean we did purchase a small shell turtle. They will sit you down and show you the book with all the people that have "adopted". He had said to my boyfriend "happy wife, happy life" which was probably his mistake as I'm better at saying "no" to something that sounds like a scam. We did not adopt any in the end as I did not believe anything done here was for the good of the turtle, and the boat ride was not worth the journey or cost.

    DO NOT GO. TOURIST SCAM
DO. NOT. GO We were scammed by the price (agreed to amount and then charged US dollars and not AU) ..the ride over was short..and very expensive..and had to pay donations and asked to pay for photos and tips which we declined as we did not like how the animals were being "cared for" on this island. Everyone sounded like a made up story to sell to tourists.. all lies.

It is a small sad Turtle farm on an island
We just visited the so called Turtle Island yesterday. What a great disappointment. We paid like 100$ for a short boat ride to the so called turtle island. We were so sure it was an island where turtles were in their natural environment and free. On reaching there we found it is just a small ill kept farm. The turtles were in the tank for you to see and touch. Too many turtles in a small place. The staff will bring out some sea weed to be fed by us. Not sure if this was the only meal the turtles were getting fed by visitors. They all seemed extremely hungry. In small cages of their own, they also had like one Iguana , bats , poorly fed birds, and also a snake . These will be brought out to take pictures if you please. The staff that were showing us around were telling us they were volunteers and don’t get paid . Not sure how much of it is true .

Just don’t go here, going here will keep places like this going. Apart from sea turtles in dirty small bassins they keep some other animals like a bat, snake and monkey. Tourists can touch and tease them, and some of them happily did. Left the place within 5 mins after arriving. Ashamed we even went here. Trip was arranged by blue dolphin, which is also an overpriced scam.

    A bit disappointing
This facility tries the rehabilitate injured turtles and birds. I know there are poor reviews. I feel bad for the keepers and the animals. The government cut off their funding. They went from 40 paid employees to 17 volunteers. They are just barely hanging on. We had a personal guide that was well informed which helped a lot.

Earlier we visited Turtle Island with guests from India. Before leaving, we bought tickets at Tanjung Benoa. After that, we immediately took a small boat to the island. When we got there, the view was very beautiful and we were greeted by friendly guards. We were taken on a tour to see the animals on the island. That's what was interesting for us when we took a photo with the mother turtle 😁 (we were very impressed with the big turtle, he could sit on it and his binoculars were very strong enough to hold our weight, while drinking young coconut water

    Mortified
Mortified, I was booked for a show and was offered a package deal to also go see Turtle island where they told us in was a conservation site. I have been to Turtle conservations before but this is nothing but the opposite. Teenage Turtles in shallow dirty tanks tanks the size of big sinks that allowed tourists to touch them, then the nightmare only got worse.... They took us towards the back where there were easily 20 plus full sized turtles in shallow cramped dirty conditions. They were obviously starving as they were struggling on top of each other so they can be fed this tiny bit of seaweed. I asked the guide will these turtles be released he said no, I asked how they got there in the first place (were any of them injured and being nursed back), he replied ' no I caught them and brought them here'. Then I asked how long have some of these turtles been here, he said some have been there for 20 years. My heart broke. Please do not go here, we have to fight and get this place shut down.

Avoid If you care about animals.
AVOID. I thought we were going out to see turtles in the wild. Instead we were taken to a place with nearly enough water for the turtles to swim in. It was absolutely depressing and the turtles were not thriving. There were other animals there too and they looked distressed especially the Luwak’s which are nocturnal and had nowhere to go to get out of the light. The bat that was also awake in the daylight. It was just awful and the massive snake was docile and obviously drugged. If you truly care about animals you would avoid this place.

Good turtle experience (considered other reviews)
Our boys (aged 12 and 14) love turtles so this was a must visit on our trip to Bali. We ended up here by mistake (by car) and reading the reviews we were worried that the boys would get a bad experience – but it turned out to be a good experience for the kids after all. Our guide seemed knowledgeable about the turtles, explained and answered all our questions. She said that all staff was volunteering and lived by the tips - not sure if this is the true - but left her with a decent tip anyways. There were different kind of turtles, that were here to recuperate after incidences e.g. that they were caught in fishing nets or have been too close to a boat propeller. Some of them you can feed seaweed - I hope that they get enough - they all seemed extremely hungry. The baby turtles were absolutely adorable! There was an option to “adopt" a turtle to set it free - and you would get a certificate with your name on it. There are other animals like iguanas, a cockatoo, an owl, a monkey, toucans, a bat, and a luwak - all in small enclosures with a very limited moving space and no animal enrichment available – some of the birds were chained to a tree or a pole. This is surely not the best animal welfare conditions I’ve seen - but not the worst either! We also visited the “Turtle Conservation and Education Centre” which is the governance owned and driven centre - for me it didn’t seem that the welfare of the turtles was taken more seriously at either places.

Zero stars if I could. The hotel we were staying at had excursions available and the one we chose, myself reluctantly, was a “turtle sanctuary”. We got to the start point where we boat out of. The sales guy is telling us all the price is 80 a person. We ask why exactly and his English get really bad all of a sudden. I told him the 80 dollar package included snorkeling and we didn’t want to snorkel. We only wanted the $50 package that includes the glass boat in crap water and a trip to “turtle island” which actually isn’t an island by the way. He tried to charge us 70 a person anyway and when he realized we only wanted what the hotel had quoted us in print he gave in. We get there and as soon as we get off we meet our “tour guide”. They immediately ask where you are from so they can gauge their prospects on getting money out of you. My only satisfaction here was that after telling them we were from California I am hopeful they were really let down after not leaving them one cent. I don’t want any tour guide I want to explore myself but there was nothing to explore anyway. Beautiful sea turtles in shallow concrete tanks, then they show us their other animals. A couple of crappy toucans, a snake and finally f’ng turkeys. I flew 20 hours to see turkeys? They ask if we wanted pictures with the animals to which I replied “Not at all”. We didn’t give them a dime. They make us take a picture in front of a turtle statue and try to sell it to you. No thanks. Beverages?? As much as I wanted a beer to take a little sour out of the experience, hell no again. No to any “contribution” or money in any of their pocket.
Do not ever go. The biggest waste of an excursion you can ever have trust me.

Don't bother! We booked for Turtle Island, which is apparently a rescue centre for injured turtles - This it is not! It's a very poor, tacky, and run down tourist attraction.

This place should be closed down, turtles in grotty glass tanks and pools, with not enough space, so they try to escape, fed only on seaweed. The murky tanks only have dregs of seaweed for food, and are not even an attempt to make it look, or feel to them like their natural habitat. There is a small what I can only describe as a child's sandpit where they breed the baby turtles, that are unlikely to ever be released to the wild.
There are various size turtles, in various tanks, in very dirty and overcrowded conditions. Next up comes the tacky zoo at the back, with a random owl, a snake, a lizard, a bat, and a monkey. All in very small cages, and the baby monkey looks absolutely terrified.

Then they hit you up with a photo you never asked for at 120'000 that you feel compelled to purchase, then stitch you up with drinks that cost double anywhere else. In effect, you're held to ransom

We went here at the recommendation of our driver, apparently it's usually 1 million IDR for a couple, but we got it a lot less. It could have been free and I would still be disgusted.

I would advise everyone boycott this place, till they get some animal welfare issues sorted out

We left Turtle Island extremely upset at the poor living conditions these poor animals are living in. Firstly we were charged $118.00 AUD for a one hour tour run through BMR Dive and Watersports. A total rip-off. The brochure shows that the turtles are in the ocean when you visit them. Complete bulldust, this is far from the truth, these beautiful turtles are living in a dirty pond of minimal water. The other animals, birds, goannas are all living in small cages, the snakes looked seriously sick and the mongoose's living conditions brought tears to my eyes, it was in a tiny rusted cage without even a floor in the cage, this poor animal was also not well. To top it off, the cheek of the guide, he tried to say that he was a volunteer and would like a tip. Please please do not support or go to this horrific tourist attraction. It should be shut down immediately.

Unfortunately we haven't done enough research before visiting this place. I wouldn't ever visit again ❗
Turtle island is a big cruetly for the animals living there;
Many turtles in small and stinky water basins,
snakes with tape around their heads,
& lots of animals in small and dirty cages!

We paid a lot of money - they told us, they use it for the health of the 'sick' animals - but it totally doesn't look like that.

Please don't support this place & stay away!
and also save your money. First they wanted 90$ for one Person, we got it down to 30$ that was still way to much for this crap. I would rather burn my Money than give it to these bad people again. 🔥

We bargaind down to $80 US and what a frigging rip off. Boat was dirty, the operator stopped over some fish and just about gased us all, we told him to keep moving. The water was full of trash on the 10 minute boat ride to the most horrendous cages and dirty pools of water to supposedly see animals in a conservation area on the inlet not an Island. Then you pay for a someone to take you through the cesspool and to use their gross bathrooms.Don't fool yourself every guide gets a cut of where they take you that charges admission and thats how we ended up there to get a ride on the boat with his friend. Do not let them take you to places to eat that they pick, choose your own and have them stop there. If people stop going then maybe those animals can be set free.

Unfortunately we wanted our driver to take us to the turtle conservation and education centre which has great reviews on TA. He drove us to the port in Benoa / Nusa Dua and we got sold to by the boat people to take speed boat to the alleged above turtle conservation Centre. Ended up paying 700,000 rupees for 4 of us for speedboat. Massively ripped off.
Get there and realise this is turtle island not the conservation centre. ☹️ no baby turtles no opportunity to release into ocean. Just a poorly run zoo with poorly treated animals and reptiles.
Beach was dirty full of rubbish, plastic and overrun with boats and Chinese tourists.
Very pushy volunteers who expect you to donate and buy souvenirs ☹️

Boat ride to the “island” is the only good thing about the tour.
The main area was full of big old turtles slumped with their eyes closed not moving I a slimed filled area they said they were changing the water. The tour guide gave a speel about being a volunteer and not getting any money. The little enclosures with ‘rescued’ turtle and baby turtles ( some dead ) was enough for us.
When the guide then showed us the cages with monkeys, big colourful birds in a cage, a cocky chained to a post, it revealed a zoo with hideous conditions.
As we made a hasty head back to the boat they tried to sell us souvenirs and the idea of adopting a baby turtle to be released in the ocean…. And upon payment you receive a certificate of authenticity.
In short - don’t go here. It is creepy & gross.

Awful. Shockingly bad environment for a range of poor animals.

Turtles are kept in shallow concrete pools with literally nothing but a tiny bit of sand in the bottom. Not a stone or piece of seaweed.

Water looked quite deoxygenated. These are marine animals that dive deep, they are not meant to be kept in 30cm of warm water with no stimulation at all.

A range of birds in empty wire mesh cages. An eagle with nothing in cage except a tree branch, that’s it, nothing else.

Bats didn’t even have the luxury of a branch. Fruit bats hanging from the mesh at top of their cage. Apart from one that was jammed into a rabbit hutch.

Who locks a peacock in a cage? They hang around if fed and treated well. A row of sad birds in small cages with nothing else in them.

I was disgusted and fuming!

Bali zoo, bird park and safari are great - great examples of how to house animals in appropriate and stimulating environments.

This place should be shut down and the owners locked in small empty cages - see how they like it.

Please, please, please for the sake of these and future animals do not go. Do not give them any profit from treating animals this way.

Absolutely disgusting.

This place is not doing any animal conservation. The poor turtles are in ankle deep filthy water, not enough room for them to swim. They encourage you to touch them for photos. They look so sad and desperate to be free. Then there are the tiny cages for the other animals - monkeys, birds, lizards and a snake with it's mouth taped shut. I actually walked out before we got to that section in tears after seeing the poor beautiful turtles in their hellish enclosures. This place needs to be shut down. The price is a con too, $100aud for snorkelling in filthy water that I refused to do, and a trip in the glass bottom boat to the island which is not an island at all. It's all a huge scam. I hope it gets closed down.
