A beautiful way to experience one of the biggest wine growing areas of Switzerland, the La Côte on the south facing hills above Lake Geneva, is a hike from Aubonne to Féchy and Mont-sur-Rolle. While the last two places are real villages, famous wine names though, Aubonne at the start is a small town with medieval character below a castle. It makes sense to spend some time here.

At the small tourist office (Point d'information touristique, open on weekends between 9.30am to 1.30pm, only April to September) brochures are available for visiting the place, especially the one called 'Visite à travers Aubonne' with a map of the 1.8km long, 28 station trail and a short description plus color photo of each site. There is also an English version, but without photos and no map. The tourist office is at the bus stop, where until 1952 a tram used to come up from Allaman, which is the reason, why the location is called 'Place de l'Ancienne Gare'.

There is nothing outstanding about Aubonne, but it is definitely a very pleasant small town with a lot of traditional character, lovely architecture and a castle on top, now a school, whose main feature is probably the unusual round tower from the 17th century.

Staying in Aubonne... in the old part of town... where houses are as they were decades ago.

Residents are warm and friendly and greeted us when we walk around. Even the neighborhood cats are so friendly.

The town has a lovely castle that is now used as a school.

Fountains all over town flowing with fresh spring water.

Some houses allow vines to grow on them - its like walking around a huge movie set.

This is a little jewel of a town perched above the lake Leman. It's castle and small alleyways will delight you on a sinner stroll and you can end with a simple plunge into its communal swimming pool which has nice green areas and big trees.

It is also an excellent stop for road bikers , lying on one of the most beautiful cycling roads in the region.

We visited Aubonne on a raining day with Swiss friends. Along with sightseeing the quaint old streets, one of our Swiss friends main motivation in visiting the old time was tasting the wine. Fine examples of Chasselas (aka Fendant) grow in this area. A floral white with soft fruit, Chasselas is one of Switzerland's most popular white wines and it shines in the Aubonne area. Pinot noir is also grown here. A good place to sample the local wine is the Caveau de Vignerons in the basement of the Chateau. Here we found friendly wine loving locals enjoying a rainy Sunday.

This old town is perfect for castles lover. Ok, it is not a huge castle. But the tower and the old part of the village have a great atmosphere. The buildings and the pavement road, gives you a feeling that you are not anymore in 2015. The view is beautiful. It's a nice place to visit for a couple of hours.
