The best exhibits are mosaic floors from two ancient Mytilene villas. The statuary is mostly partial and not nearly as interesting. Their temporary exhibits seem to be interesting in general, I missed the Gastronomy in Antiquity but was able to enjoy Lesvian ceramics through the ages. It is a bit unusual to see 5000 year old exhibits next to contemporary ones, but I thought it gave a nice sense of continuity of the tradition of pottery in Lesvos.

This comparatively small museum houses a wealth of interesting artefacts, but the mosaic floors are fabulous! Very impressive.

Still called the New Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, this little museum has a wonderful collection of Mosaic floors and wall-paintings from the villas on Agia Kyriaki hill, all relocated and reconstructed as they were originally placed.
An excellent collection of sculptures and marble reliefs of the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

The big attractions here are, of course, the mosaic floors that were found in Mytilene homes. They are just gorgeous. The amount of detail in them is wonderful and we enjoyed the photos documenting just how the mosaics were removed from their original locations and moved to the museum. There was a very fine ceramics display comparing/contrasting ancient ceramics with works by current artists. The food exhibit was fascinating. I took photos of some of the ancient recipes and plan to try them! Photography is restricted in some areas of the museum.

I've been to this museum many times while visiting family in Lesvos. Ever reviewer is correct, the mosaics are simply stunning and so detailed. I really could spend hours looking at them. The staff is lovely, especially the elderly woman that one reviewer complained about. In Greece, order and respect is valued and I think its ok if visitors are occasionally followed as there have been problems in the past. It doesn't bother me if a caretaker is watchful over valuable artwork..its happened many times at museums, I get it and understand it. Now that we have that out of the way, its a great way to spend a few hours and learn about Lesvos. Afterwards, relax under the shade of an old olive tree that will be waiting for you when you've completed your walk through the museum.

It has many beautiful mosaics . The museum itself is quite small but has beautiful ceramics and also other exhibitions. Some rooms didn’t have sir conditioning so it was hard to stay while sweating. Children don’t pay. Adults 4 euro. The photo exhibition about the restoration of acropol in Athens is very interesting.

I was mostly interested in the mosaic floors, but the entire museum is clean, well sign posted and very interesting. All signage is in Greek and English with lots of information and history. Marble statues, history of food and eating habits with cooking utensils, interesting room regarding funeral banquets. Well worth a visit!!
