After a long detour on a narrow, windy, gravel road which was probably about 15 minutes worth of driving off Owaka Highway you come to Cannibal Bay. The bay has headlands at each end and two small river outlets which didn't have much water coming...More

Nice to visit but be aware the road in is unsealed and narrow in places. Nice for a visit. No camping allowed.

We went there on the advice of Thomas’s Catlins Lodge owner where we stayed and have not been disappointed. We walked on the beach and stumbled upon a Sea Lion who was resting on the beach - incredible!

The bay is beautiful and there were no other people there. However unfortunately the sea lions weren’t around either today. I could imagine it’d be incredible when they are!

We may have been lucky but the sea lions were there. We counted 5. Drive down there is a bit rough at times because of the unsealed road. Be careful. But it is worth it.

We saw 14 Sea Lions here and on the next beach west over the short track behind the headland. Take care to check for fresh tracks into the sand dunes as they are often found there.

Cannible Bay is a bit off the beaten track, in fact thats what you could call the gravel road that takes you to Cannible Bay, but it is well worth the effort to visit. This is the place to go if you want to see...More
