This village dates back to medieval times when the early Portuguese monarchs gave the land to the order of templar knights to defend the borders of Portugal against the muslims further east and south. It lies in a mountain side defended by a fortress and is a maze of beautiful old stone houses built in the style of Beira. Very interesting and picturesque.

Right beside the highest mountain of Portugal, sits some lovely villages however Castelo Novo with its landscapes of lush green to a brown, arid terrain bathed by a bright sunshine. From when entering into the village it is like traveling back in time while you absorb the history of the locality.
From the medieval castle (circa XIII century), still have visible some of history like the Clock tower, the cobble roads or the small bridge at the entrance of Roman origin to the marvellous houses build with “xisto” shale and local stone, which I would highlight the old Council building circa XIII century and at the centre of the square the ‘stone column’ where criminals were punished and exposed, to the wonderful churches, this is a place which you can’t miss.

Drove here from Castelo Branco where I was staying. Not too far. I was on a personal quest to visit villages in the area. Barbara at the Tourismo Office was very friendly, knowledgeable, and spoke very good English. I did not have a great deal of time because of trying to make it to Idanha-a-Velha also this day and had to turn the car in that afternoon. The castle actually has catwalks, which is unusually nice compared to other castle ruins in a lot of the other villages in the general area. The area actually recommends 12 villages to visit, and in total, I only made six during my entire stay, and did not have adequate time to appreciate some of the ones I saw. There is a grape stomping area carved out of rock which is very neat. The square is neat. Glad I went here. Thanks again, Barbara.

Not only the castle, but all the surroundings are beautiful. Tiny medieval houses, water fountains, churches, really nice.

Amazing village with this great castle placed right in the middle. Amazing sights from the top, over seeing the whole village.
