July 2019 - We reserved the bikes ahead of time and were greeted by the awesome owners. The bike ride was tough but beautiful. When my son blew both tires on his bike, the owner came to our rescue (even though it was late and he had dinner plans). The coffee shop had great food, friendly staff and an awesome vibe.…

Our ride with Simbahollin was really special! The owner worked with us to move our ride time because we had some bad weather, which made for tough, slow driving conditions. He was incredibly accommodating. I think because it was the last weekend of the season we ended up with a private ride with Louisa and it was such a treat! The horses are incredibly well-taken care of and well-trained. We've done other rides in Costa Rica and Hawaii and the Icelandic horse is entirely different than any other we've been exposed to. They're sweeter with each other and with riders. You don't have to worry about them kicking each other (or you!), because it's just not something they do, as explained by Louise. They're gentle and have a beautiful and comfortable gait called Tolting, which we spent a lot of time doing. Their saddles were incredibly comfortable. You can tell the tack they use is high quality and well-maintained. The route we took included a little bit of everything including fields, across a river, and along a stunning black beach. The scenery is unreal in Iceland, but it seemed extra special to see it while on the back of an Icelandic horse. We did not ride any where else in Iceland, so I have nothing to compare Simbahollin to, but I will say this was a wonderful experience from start to finish. It's a family run business by a family who clearly cares about their horses and their patrons. It was a very special experience! Also, the coffee shop was closed for the season when we were there in mid-September, but that was the meeting point before we headed out to the barn.…

I opted for the Sandar valley tour which is a perfect way for beginners and nervous riders to get to know the wonderfully sure-footed and calm Icelandic horses. The scenery was absolutely awesome and it was lovely to get off the beaten track and into the valley and pure nature. We went at a walking pace which is perfect for beginners and for gaining confidence in the saddle. We were carefully looked after by our excellent guide Kerstin who made sure that everyone was comfortable and getting along OK during the ride. I, (age 70 !) rode with a young couple and 2 small-ish children and we all had a wonderful time. The whole experience was superb. I should add that the atmosphere at the stables was very good too ( and this is not automatically the case with some riding stables!) ; everything is efficiently organised and well maintained; and the horses are clearly much respected and extremely well cared for.…

I hadn’t ridden in many years but the guide was experienced & paired me with a gentle mare with just enough spunk to make it interesting. The valley was beautiful & then we finished the ride at the sea. A terrific way to experience the “real” Iceland without having to eat petrified shark. A must while in the Westfjords!…
