It’s not often you find a review of a road on trip advisor.

It is maybe a reflection of how remote this area is with not a lot on offer other than the wonderful natural scenery with the opportunities for outdoor activity . However spectacular is the word to describe this road – if we can call it a road.
Even by Iceland’s standards this is a difficult drive and it cannot be completed in a standard car, you will damage it and possibly endanger yourself. If you have a hired 4 x 4 without full damage insurance then get extra cover.
I consider myself an experienced off road driver but still sustained some minor damage to the underside of our vehicle on an ascent into a stream. This may be in part due to the vehicle which was a rented Ford Kuga , not a true 4 x 4 and probably more at home on a motorway.

We did the drive in early September in good weather if you are visiting when the rivers are high then you may need a super 4 x 4 as used in the highland areas with higher ground clearance and an engine snorkel.
It wouldn’t be a good idea to take the road in the dark so don’t leave it too late in the day. We took 3 hours including photo stops and a picnic on the way.

The Westfjords in general is less populated and with fewer tourists, but Svalvogar is truly the road not taken.
It's hard to say what I liked most - the colours of the mountains, an old abandoned house, the rocky coastline, a lighthouse in the middle of nowhere.
It was really cool to go under the cliffs, and the blue blue creeks with waves crashing against them made for the perfect icing on the cake!

We took this drive from south to north and saw one motorcycle and two SUVs during the seven hours we spent. (We stop a lot for pictures.) We also saw two bicyclists riding bikes with the fattest tires I’ve ever seen—these two were amazing. We saw them in Thingeyri with their bikes in the morning and then next about halfway around, so I’m assuming they came across the mountains instead of around, the way we came. Lots of beautiful scenery that will look very different depending on the weather—we found ourselves wishing for a bit more of Iceland’s dramatic cloud cover on the day we went. Be sure to hit the southern part around low tide to be safe. We checked tide tables in advance and had no issues. We were in a LandCruiser and it was perfect for the drive. (The other 2 cars we saw were also Land Cruisers.) I should also say that we were lucky in having best-case road conditions: much of the road had been recently worked on and there had been no rain for numerous days. I imagine that it can be much trickier in less ideal conditions.

The Svalvogar trail is a rugged trail only accessible to super jeeps in the summer. The drive follows the beautiful coastline with dramatic mountains and towering cliffs. We even go "under the cliffs".
At the edge of the peninsula are some gorgeous creeks and a lone lighthouse. Fantastic views of the great Arnarfjordur.
This makes for a great day tour from Isafjordur.
