Precious site near the village of Olimpiada. The entrance is free, the area opens at 8.30 and closes at 15.30 every day but tuesday. Mind that one of the entrance (the nearest to the village) is left open after 15.30 and the site is surely better late in the evening, especially with hotel weather. It is not one of the best in Greece, but is still amazingand worthing. Born village of Aristotele, it conteins his ashes. Unfortunately the connected museum is in the village of Polygyros, on hour far by car. Wonderful view, panoramic over some little lonely beaches.

It was really nice. This place can be enjoyed only when the sun is behind the clouds. It’s great physical exercise, but also full of history. Overall, a great place to visit if you’re close to it.

Very interesting site. Fabulous views. Worth a couple of visits. On one of the days we visited, there were guides in attendance but the signposting and information boards were very good. Sturdy footwear recommended. In September one of the two access points was closed on Tuesdays.

There was a lady there who 'welcomes' visitors and would shout at them as if they are dogs by screaming 'down'. Sorry my kid didn't see it was forbidden to step on the ruins, still not a reason for the silly hostess to humiliate her by shouting in front of all people: 'down'. Should learn English properly at least.

An interesting site in a beautiful setting with some excellent signage. As indicated by another reviewer, this site is not easily accessible for people who have difficulty walking, but if you don't have problems the site is well worth a visit. An extensive section of the ancient walls has been well restored, so you have a good sense of what the fortifications were like. Very clear stoa foundation and house and store foundations. Excavated sections are scattered around the hilltop, but there are paths leading from one area to the next and views through the trees of the beautiful beaches and blue water surrounding the hill. The town of Olympiada below has a very comfortable hotel and great dining in the tavernas along the beach. This is one of the lesser known jewels of the Chalkidiki. This summer there was no fee, but an entry guardhouse was under construction, so by next year there may be a fee.

Just spent two weeks wonderful weeks at the small beach resort of Olymbiada, home of the Ancient site of Stagira, birthplace of Aristotle.Admission was free and the site just a stones throw from the lovely tavernas on the beach at Olymbiada.
We visited the site several times and found it a haven of peace, away from the busy beach and away from the hustle and bustle of other holidaymakers ( not that the beach was really busy !)
There are lots of quiet, shady ,hidden tracks through the woods ,away from the heat of the sun. The archaeological remains are still being excavated and are on display all over the site, which overlooks the sea and rocks.Part of the remains are high above the Viliage ,overlooking the whole area and there are some magnificent views to be had.
One track followed the shoreline and we were able to scramble down to a rocky outcrop to sunbath.Remember to wear trainers and just think of those lovely tavernas in the villiage after your walk

We were lucky to be given a guided tour of Stagira by a local expert. Passionate about Aristotle, he brought this ancient city to life for us.
The great philosopher - tutor of Alexander the Great - was born in Stagira over 2,000 years ago. Plenty of the city walls, and its inner buildings, have been lovingly excavated, but much still needs to be done, when funds are available.
It's interesting to see the later Byzantine changes to the walls, but the perfect construction and symmetry of the original Greek granite walls is incredible.
Be warned, the site is perched on a steep slope...but from the most strategic high points this offers far-reaching views, up to wooded hillsides inland and along the coast, to hidden sandy coves.
I hope the money is eventually found to complete the excavation of this epic historically important site.

We loved visiting Stagira. It was a beautiful family walk and a good occation to tell our son about Aristotle and how he contributed to the world.

If you are interested in ancient Greek archaeology this place will probably be worth visiting as it is the birthplace of Aristotle.
Stagira is best reached on food and is a short walk from the harbour end of Olimpiada.
The ruins are spread out over a reasonably large area and are all accessible. Information boards are placed near to the larger ruins, but are not particularly helpful. To get to the remains of a castle, you will need to go up a steep path to the top of a hill. At the top there is a good view over Olimpiada.

Very nicely reconstructed ancient town. There is enough information around and it is not overdone artificially. You can definitely feel the spirit of the age and get an idea of how people lived at that time. Comes accompanied with beautiful views of the sea. Have in mind that during the day it is very hot and as there are no cafes around, come prepared with water 😀

Hello, is there a gate to access Ancient Stagira, with opening / closing times, or is there free access to the trails from the road? I'll be there this winter at around 4pm and I'm not sure if I can just park and stroll around. Thank you!

as others have said there is a gate near the harbour and its free to walk around the site with lots of different paths, you can even walk down to the beach nearby
