A great scenic drive with many scenic overlooks over beautiful NC mountains and valleys. Expect to take two to three hours to complete this parkway drive that ends in Robbinsville. Expect moderate traffic during the fall "leaf peeping" season, but you will certainly savor the...More
Simply beautiful drive !! Started in Tellico Plains, Tn and drive the skyway. Went to Bald River Falls which is 6 miles off the skyway but very much worth the little side trip. Didn’t drive the full 43 miles to North Carolina, but plan on...More
There’s an old saying that goes, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” This is excellent advice when you come to a particular fork in the road in the western corner of Graham County. Bear left and you’ll be heading west...More
Cherohala Skyway is so beautiful. We were on a motorcycle, but I think it would be just as awesome in a car. There were several pull-offs to see the impressive views. The elevation rose pretty high, so I definitely needed a jacket as we climbed....More
We do this ride as often as we can when we are up in that area every June. It is a nice, winding road, two-lane road with lots of overlooks to see the beauty below. At the peak, it is about 4,500 ft and can...More
We started out in Maggie Valley NC and made our way over to Cherohala Skyway. What a beautiful ride on a motorcycle. Had never ridden this road before. Started in Robbinsville NC and ended in Tallico Plains TN. A must do if you are out...More
This incredible driving experience is comparable to the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are frequent pull offs, many with picnic tables. One has put toilets. That one is about halfway over. Good interpretive signs. Views are incredible. Elevation goes from 2500 to over 5000. Be aware...More
Did this run two days in a row. Once in the rain and once in the sun. A little tricky in the rain with compromised vision and slick roads, very beautiful in the sun. Let’s you out in Telico Plains for lunch and then a...More
Sunday, Oct. 23: Left home in south Alabama at 7 AM Central time and took exit 81 at Lenoir City, Maryville, and Wares Valley Road in PF, arriving at our VRBO condo "Mountainview" at 4:38 E. Traffic was heavy from Chattanooga to our exit on I-75. Got settled in and went to The Island for the first time. Rode The Wheel in daylight and dark with the $20 combo ticket. Couldn't get into Paula Deen's for 1.5 hours, so we ate at Timberwood Grill and it was great. We had lightweight jackets on, but...More

Melissa, I loved reading your trip report. The singalong at the Primative Church is something hubby and I would have loved. I know what you mean about a long day of driving, it tires us out worse than hiking for hours. Sounds like you had a great trip with a good mix of touristy and park times. Thanks for sharing your trip, wish more people would post.
We're back!!!! (11 Replies)
We just got back this afternoon. We had the absolute best time. I'm not going to go into a big long trip report. Just highlight the details of what we did and where we ate. We didn't spend a lot of time doing much in Gatlinburg this trip. We took the motorcycle. It was soooo hot in downtown, I didn't want to spend a lot of time walking the strip, sweating my butt off. We met up with Buck-Tom and Tinkerbell and had a fantastic time riding in the Smokies. We rode to the following: Maggie...More

Nice report, Lovin! Glad you had a nice time and got to meet up with fellow TA friends for your ride in the Smokies! Sounds like you covered a lot of ground while there. Personally, I'm not a fan of motorcycles for various reasons but found it strange that Los Rancheros doesn't allow motorcycles to park in their lot. That doesn't seem very nice and it's not like they take up a lot of room like a motor home or semi! Don't understand the logic in that other than they want to lose business....More
Nashville to Cherohala Skyway I40 or I24? (7 Replies)
Which way is better from downtown Nashville to the entrance of the Cherohala Skyway at Tellico Plains? I40 then south on I75, or I 24 then north on I75? It appears that both are approximately the same distance and time (according to google maps), but is one way better in terms of less traffic, less construction, more enjoyable, etc. If it makes a difference we would be driving this route on a Monday in late Spring.

You'll want to take I-40 to south 75 exiting where you can connect to SR129(Tail of the Dragon) which will take you over to the junction with the Skyway. These are state roads, twisty and turny, and its not a quick drive so expect it to take a while to get to the junction. 129 follows the Little Tennessee River and its a beautiful drive. Its also not an area that has a lot of stores so stock up in Maryville or Alcoa on gas and drinks etc.. Enjoy!!
