This small, beautiful lake is best visited in autumn when the colours are amazing due to the "mirtille" plants all have gone red [see images]. The lake is home to a rare frog [only lives here] btw. Directions to get to Lago Nero. Drive up to Abetone [from La Lima]. Just before the village of Abetone [a dreadful place btw] you will see a sign at the left of the main road for Val di Luce [downhill] and the botanical gardens [uphill]. When you arrive at the bot. gardens, park in front, or when full, drive a bit further up on the road where you will see a large parking lot [used in the old days for skiers]. Put on your walking boots and walk appr. up in 1,5 hours [uphill] to Lago Nero [signposted, track 102 and 104]. When arriving at Lago Nero [there is a rifugio, open all year] you have many other possibilities to hike further up. One of the nicest ones i.m.o. is to go further uphill to Campolino [track 100] where you may encounter marmots on the rocks on the way up. Used to be an old ski station which was removed a few years ago. Take water and food with you.

Just before you get to the town of Abetone, take the road signed to Orto Botanico di Abetone. Park just beyond the gardens (plenty of space) and walk up towards the forest.
The majority of the walk to the lake is uphill and at times VERY steep. However, the walk through the beech wood forest is lovely and the views once you get to the lake are spectacular. About halfway up there is a refuge (not always open) surrounded by lots of picnic tables in the shade of the trees and a fresh water spring - a great place to stop, eat and rest. There is also a small shrine here dedicated to 5 partisans who were killed there in WW2.
The last part of the walk to the lake is VERY steep and partly weaving between the trees but once at the lake the views more than make up for the effort. There is also a refuge at the lake (please note: at times of drought, the toilets here are closed).
Of course, the return journey is much easier as it is all downhill

Wearied by museums and buildings I looked for a way to get out into the fabulous surrounding countryside. Michel had lots of ideas but this one was the one I chose first. It did not disappoint. tranquil, challenging, and with a swim too. perfect. I shall be taking Michel's advice again.
