The Old Point is not new to us but is always full of suprises and especially the 'specials' which are displayed on a board in the main bar.

My wife went for the fish which was a very good choice while I wasn't particulary hungry and decided on the chicken goujons of which there were plenty, nicely presented and very tasty.

At this time of year chips are hit and miss but in the Old Point they always manage to produce high quality chips which are crispy, hot and greaseless.

Sauces and garnishes were clearly freshly prepared and added to the meal. Service was first-class served in a restaurant which has been recently been redecorated and spotlessly clean.

The place was busy and there was plenty of conversation to be had with other diners.

In all, a very pleasant evening out, well fed with good food and wasn't charged a ransom.

Superb Meal
Nov 2018 • Couples
Decided at last minute to go out for lunch called into the Old Point Inn in Kilrea had their set menu which was priced very reasonable at £14.50 for a 3 course meal. My husband had turkey and ham and I had roast beef and Yorkshire pudding . The meal was served very quickly and was piping hot and there was plenty of it . I would definitely recommend this eating house and will be back soon.

Pleasantly surprised by the welcome and the standard of fayre presented for our 6th Anniversary.
Jul 2018 • Couples
The standard of our food was impeccable. We went all out for our Anniversary and were so impressed, we'll definitely be back again, probably make it our local!!
I can't believe we've lived just up the road from this little jewel of a restaurant for almost 2 years and never been here before now!
When we were seated in the dining room it was quite full (always a good sign!) with regulars and families too. One family had their young daughters with them who were quite loud (excited, but very polite!) who provided the entertainment for us all.
The menu was a welcome surprise to us too, with vegetarian options prevalent rather than the usual afterthought with many other restaurants we've eaten at. The quality of the items available for the price charged was a welcome surprise to us too. A 3 course meal for 2, including drinks for under £60, who could say no to that? We're delighted to learn they're open on Sunday evenings too, which will give my hubby a night off from the cooking & washing up if he wants?!! Lol
Be advised, please call for a reservation in advance to avoid disappointment. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Feeding the Grandchildren in a splendid place of grandeur
Sep 2017 • Family
Consistency is the keynote experience when dining in the Old Point. The meals are always good, they simply don't do bad meals - ever!

With three grandchildren all under 7 there was apprehension but we shouldn't have worried because they were quickly supplied with blackcurrant juice and junior menus which they could read easily.

A mixture of burgers sausages, beans, skinny chips and champ left all three well provided for.

For us the grandparents a special offer of Hake modestly priced at £12 complete with all the trimmings made me look no further. Grandma went for the chicken served with bacon and melted cheese.

The facilities are good and children can easily cope with them without supervision and that means we weren't running constantly.

Young barmaids obviously well experienced coping with children did an excellent job, know how to communicate with little ones and had them grinning from ear to ear.

The deserts went down a bomb, well presented and adequate for all tastes.

The dining room is newly refurbished creating a great atmosphere and a lovely view of the countryside as it was still light.

Other diners, including a 16 year birthday party made this place a really nice spot to be and again the food and service was well above 5*.

Prices are exceptionally modest for the level and quality of food, service and surroundings.

The Old Point is reliable because it never serves bad food, no hit or miss, always consistent and modestly priced.

It got a face lift since we were last in giving it a bright and cheery atmosphere and when you add this to the magnificent view of the rolling countryside against a background of woodland and a few cows dotted here and there you have the perfect vista for a relaxing meal.

Orders are taken in the bar and if you are having a drink it is carried by a very pleasant waitress to your table and the food comes quickly afterwards.

Usually there are two specials on a board in the bar and these are well worth considering because they are specially prepared by the chef and when they are gone that's that!

I went for a chicken dish with a very light pastry on top. It came with what I would describe as a dish of fresh broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and parsnips as well as chips and both sides were of exceptionally high quality in texture and taste.

My wife had 'surf and turf' something we avoided up to now but it was top notch with high quality chicken and really good steak. The garlic fries were new potatoes and the mushroom sauce was fully of body and taste. I know this because I was allowed to taste it!

Service is important not to feel important but to add to the experience and in the old point the staff really make it an experience well worth the effort of dressing up to go out and that is key to a good evening.

Taking into account the welcome in a very traditional bar, the food, the service, the panoramic view and the overall eating out experience I would say the Old Point deserves to be on anyone's list of good restaurants even if it means a bit of travelling.

We skipped starters and deserts but for those going the full hog it was clear to us that there is plenty to choose from and all very well presented and delivered to the table.

The 'Old Point' takes its name from an expression used to describe the point where several country lanes converge presenting an opportunity for a business venture to spring up. In many cases this was a 'watering hole' or a wee grocery shop or indeed both together. This was exactly the beginning of the history of the 'Old Point' near Kilrea where today there is a modern restaurant blending in the past with the present.

The establishment is therefore steeped in history and this is reflected in the standard of service diners can expect to receive when they choose to dine here.

The menu is simple but broad enough to please most connoisseurs of good food and wine. Speaking of the wine, it is not expensive but easy on the palate.

Our visit was to check out the steaks and we were not disappointed either with the quality, presentation or indeed the price. Meats are sourced locally and cooked to prefection adding only natural sauces which aren't fished out of bottles.

Casting healthy eating to the side for one night we added french fried onions and what a treat! Absolutely gorgeous, tasty and real fresh. While I couldn't resist the chips my other half went for the champ which was steaming hot and again real fresh and not straight out of a microwave oven.

The steaks had real body, plenty of bite and tender with the real taste of good meat. I chose the pepper sauce while my wife had the Bushmills sauce which contained chopped mushrooms and again real fresh.

I would suggest that the 'Old Point' probably excels in its presentation of steaks, knows how they should be cooked and respects the wishes of the individual customer's tastes which can be hard to match.

I suppose added to a good food experience we were conscious that we were sitting at the crossroads of time where people, in the past, met to have a chat and a tipple and while things have moved on the 'Old Point' hasn't lost any of its charm or place in history.

We finished with ice cream desserts and they were out of this world - perhaps another bit of the old world!

Set in the countryside outside Kilrea and overlooking Creighton's Wood this is the idyllic location for a peaceful meal in a beautiful rural setting. There are no fancy neon signs or posters lurking out from hedgerows telling you the Old Point is near at hand. The entrance is at the rear of the premises in a spacious car park and you can go direct to the dining room or stop off in the bar where you can eavesdrop on the locals having the craic about local affairs or their attitudes towards international events. In any case you will get in the mood for a relaxing meal served promptly in a spotless diningroom.

While I chose hot chili pasta my other half had the hake. My pasta was huge and sufficient to ask for a doggy bag and enjoy a second go the next day! The hake was the real fish, full of body and I was allowed to sample and I will certainly be back for my own helping next time!

The wine was very modestly priced and the quality was first class. Service was excellent and tables were far enough apart to enjoy our privacy without feeling isolated.

To me the Old Point is unique, personal service by unassuming staff in a beautiful rural setting and something that is almost a glimpse into the past.

If you are looking for something which goes beyond good food and good service the Old Point has it. Well worth a visit again and again!

We had only the one course and picked up a very modest bill for less than £40 and that included drinks.

Called on Thursday evening and restaurant was not open. Had food in the bar which i don't usually like but it was quiet and food was good. Check the bill before you pay as i believe the pasta was £11 but i was charged £12.50. Didn't like to say as i was not sure and staff had been very pleasant and the food was quick and very nice. I just counted it as the tip!
