We Stumbled Upon This Treasure Totally on Accident--and the Result Was Stunning
Jun 2016 • Family
Our surprise bonus while walking back to the car, was to find that the church Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago Apostol was open. Miguel, one of the local co-directors of this project, named Sistema de documentacion 3D del patrimonio cultural de Castilla La Mancha, held and impromptu tour which included the history of the unique Madonna, Nuestra Senora de los Martires who is the patron of Carrion. Originally crafted in the 13th century, she was moved from the Hermitage (also known as the Santuario Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion) at the base of the fortification into the church. Her uniqueness lies in the fact that during a reformation of the Catholic church here in Spain, these older Madonna statues were destroyed and new “approved” versions replaced those crafted in the earlier centuries. Due to strange circumstances, this Madonna was purposely split into several pieces and hidden throughout the territory. She was pieced back together after many years and is now one of only a few remaining wooden sculptures from her time.
