This destination is a must for Game of Thrones fans, and well worth the visit for anyone who loves castles and medieval architecture. Getting there, isn't easy. Drive first to the town of Hombrados, which is a 15 minutes drive from Molina de Aragon (a town with an imposing castle ruin). In the town of Hombrados the villagers have put up small signes that give you direction to the castle. After driving through the town, you enter onto a dirt road. Don't worry - it´s not that bad and it won´t damage your car (but if you have a sports car I would not recommend you to drive there). When you get to a crossing with 4 roads, you must take a left - otherwise you´ll end up lost somewhere in the Highlands. It takes approximately 15 minutes to get to the Castle from the town (at 10-20 mph). Very few visitors (we where the only ones there when we visited). Remarkable construction, and the pictures speak for themselves. It is not possible to enter the castle, so you must enjoy the exterior.

My husband and I visited Castillo de Zafra today as part of our multi-country GOT filming locations trip. This has been our favorite location out of all the GOT countries we’ve visited.

Getting there is a bit difficult, but worth the journey. We live in the US and haven’t driven in Spain until today. For those who aren’t used to driving in a different country (like us), our best advice is to rent your car from Madrid Airport and drive to the castle — this will help avoid any inner city traffic for first time international drivers. There are other car rental companies within the city, but you’ll have to drive through insane traffic and fast drivers around you to reach the highway.

The trip was about 2.5 hours from Madrid one-way. You pretty much stay on two (mostly) empty highways the whole time until you drive through a few small towns. There are many gas stations along the way. Be careful as some roads become two-lane roads and drivers passing each other up.

Once you hit the small town of Hombrados, make a left and follow the signs. The villagers have been kind enough to leave a few signs throughout the road to help you navigate.

Once the dirt (and rocky) road begins, you’ll drive for about 10 minutes until you hit a 4 way road — take the left (follow the small ZAFRA sign). Don’t give up now, just keep driving for another 10 minutes and you’ll see the castle. We drove up near the top to an area where we parked our car and hiked our way up. There are no bathrooms nearby and you cannot enter the castle. We were the only ones there around noon on a Thursday so we took lots of pictures! Good luck!

Having driven 6KM along a rough stone and dirt road we finally reached the castle without a puncture.
Unfortunately you can't get in as all the doors are locked.
used in the film The Game of Thrones.

Arrived there from a hiking trail. Not worth the walk. I think, and the trail is good enough for a car to make it through. It's apparently famous because some Games of Thrones was filmed there.
It's private propety and the inside is not accessible, but a decent spot if you're driving around the area.
