Gorgeous

I think it's hard to beat the stretches of canal around Ellesmere, especially the length between Ellesmere and Colemere. At one point, you have Blakemere on one side and the canal on the other - it's magical. Summer or winter, they are so beautiful and peaceful places to walk. Wear boots/wellies if it's wet, as there are muddy bits.

Canal, towpath, amenities, sorted
May 2021 • Solo
It’s a canal, so it does what it says on the tin.

The towpath is in ok condition, though has the potential to get muddy, and heading towards Whittington it’s mostly grass with some narrow sections.

Ellesmere has just about all the amenities you’ll need - a Tesco, a Coop, a delicatessen, Post Office, marina... the towpath isn’t too busy.

The meres provide alternative walks, a short distance from the canal.

Lovely walk
Apr 2021
Quaint little walk along the Ellesmere Canal with the wife and kids (and the dog), it was quite handy that the beginning/end of our walk was at Tesco so the kids could get a drink to take with them and use the toilets when we got back.

The only thing that let this down was the lack of respect for the area from other dog walkers... No-one wants to see a black poo bag hanging in the trees or on the ground (you've picked the poo up, at least put it in a bin!)

Other than that it was a nice area for a good hour or so walk along the canal and through the woods.

Lovely walk or boat trip
Sep 2020
I have walked along it many times and I have steered a narrow boat along it too once. what a beautiful place the canal is with its bridges, its tow paths, historic buildings. A great walk and highly recommended to anyone once we are out of lockdown, pencil it in as a place to visit I recommend it.

Lovely Llangollen canal. First time adventure on the canal which was thoroughly enjoyed. The briefing at Ellesmere was good and informative but then off you go. Thank goodness we had experience canal users with us.

Laugh a minute

Great cycling and views along this canal route. Can at times be a bit hair raising from bridge 51single sloppy not maintained track till you get to bridge 54 then its puddle dodging for a fair way but in all a good trip that makes you smile avoiding taking an unexpected dip in murky water.

Lots to see

Lovely canal to walk along. At the Ellesmere end there is a sculpture trail. Scenery changes every 10 minutes. Although it is a level walk it is not a sealed towpath so can get a little muddy

We have done this trip a number of times and thoroughly recommend going to llangollen via Chirk and the amazing Pontecyllte aqueduct.

The staff at Ellesmere Marina are lovely, friendly and helpful.
