Nice walks
Nov 2021 • Solo
You cant get all the way round but still good walks. Park alongside part of it with toilets/ice cream van/play areas. Wooded area further along. Seemed popular with dogs. Paid parking.

Beautiful all year round
Aug 2021
The Mere is a stunning expanse of open water, surrounded by fields and trees, and by the park area which leads to the picturesque parish church and the town centre. If you take your camera, you'll be spoiled for choice - every few yards leads to a new scene. The swans and other water birds will gather by the promenade to be fed (you can buy bird food in a few places nearby). There is also delicious ice cream for human visitors and a really good dog-friendly cafe/restaurant at the Boathouse. In the park, you will find part of the Ellesmere sculpture trail, a well-equipped children's play area, and a BMX track. Further on, you can gather conkers in the autumn or play hide-and-seek among the trees. The walk goes halfway around the Mere, giving stunning views back across towards the town. And if you'd like your views to be from the water, there is boat hire available during the summer. If you venture into the town centre, you will find a lovely selection of independent shops, cafes and pubs, along with a market on Tuesdays and a delightful branch of the Shropshire Union canal. The town is also decorated by yarn-bombers twice a year and there are often creative activities, quizzes etc. available from the library.
Cheapest parking is in the town centre (5 minutes walks), but there are also several car parks adjacent to the Mere.

Pleasant open air space
Aug 2021 • Friends
We dropped in to Ellesmere for a break when staying nearby with a large group of our children and their families. It was relaxing to walk alongside the mere, although it is a shame that you cannot walk all the way round.

Disappointed
Aug 2021
What has happened at the Mere? Why are Visitor Facilities still advertised on websites - when they have gone? On several recent visits, there is no where to get a cup of tea, go to the toilet or find a decent seat to sit on.
Shropshire County Council and Ellesmere Town Council used £1.6 million Heritage Lottery Fund plus Shropshire tax payers money to demolish old public toilets by the zebra crossing and replace with new ones in the refurbished Boathouse, The Boathouse lease 2013 intended the running a restaurant, cafe and visitor information centre on behalf of the council.
The Visitor Centre has gone!
The cafe has been replaced by a bar! If you want a cup of tea you are met with a frosty reception at the restaurant door and referred to the outdoor Kiosk (next to the broken seats) which on mid week afternoons in summer school holidays I have never found open. The mobile drinks van near the children playground also shuts at 3pm - in August!
Toilets (yes the ones that were publicly funded) are now closed to everyone other than those having a meal at the restaurant. Big notices direct you to ones a long way away.
The Mere is as beautiful as ever but Shropshire County Council and Ellesmere Town Council need to take control again before the area becomes a bigger disappointment for visitors.

Nice place for a mere-side walk
Jun 2021
Nice place for a stroll, and a drink or ice cream. Easy parking for a small fee. Busy when we visited on a Saturday afternoon, and queueing required for the café. You can easily also walk into the town centre from this location. Small children will like the ducks, and the park.

Beautiful & peaceful

Beautiful lake with short walk round the waters edge & through wooded area. Plenty of swans geese & ducks to amuse children & adults alike. Parking very handy on the roadside next to the lake

In desperate need of an update!

In desperate need of an update!
The mere itself was beautiful of course but nothing much is needed for that to happen.
The benches and the play park however, awful!
All the benches are either broken, badly worn and a huge eyesore. I don’t see why updated, safe benches can’t be put in. Especially for elderly people, disabled, pregnant etc.
The play park, half the swings were missing, the roundabout was broken and there was another broken piece of apparatus which was a pole. There was a boarded shed, all of which looked horrendous and so unsafe!
If a little amount of money was actually invested in areas of the mere then I’m sure the mere and Ellesmere itself would find it would be a lot more popular. Then people would actually enjoy going because they weren’t looking at awful eye sores.

Great picnic spot
May 2021 • Couples
We visited The Mere on a bank holiday Monday it is a lovely mere with a seaside feel walking along the promenade. We found a nice quiet spot along the shore to enjoy a picnic in the sun a really perfect place to enjoy an afternoon.

What a pretty little place!
May 2021 • Family
Me, my partner and our baby visited here a couple of times whilst staying at Woodland Park Lodges a short drive away. What a pretty and peaceful little place! Plenty of wildlife to see and a kids playground which our baby loved. We had a lovely walk and picnic right near the lake, the views over the lake were absolutely stunning, so breathtakingly beautiful. Got some great photos. Unfortunately you can only walk half way around before having to turn back the same way you came. We went at around 8pm so it was pretty quiet and there wasn’t many people around apart from a few people camping/fishing and walking, but I imagine it would be very busy with families etc earlier on in the day. There’s a cafe located right by The Mere but unfortunately it was closed when we visited due to the time. There’s plenty of benches to sit and relax at and spaces to enjoy a picnic and just watch the world go by. Very clean to, plenty of bins around for dog waste etc. Highly recommend for a visit at any time throughout the year and we will definitely be back when we’re next in Ellesmere again!

Better than some Lakes I could mention...
Oct 2020
Before the last lockdown we visited the Ellesmere town and some of its meres. The Mere is a very pleasant walk around and full of wildlife with a few nice sculptures in some places. Once the current lockdown is over I recommend it to anyone who likes a walk. Far better than the often overrated and sheep like tourist trodden Lake District.
