We drove to the Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center to check on trail conditions for the Echo Bay Trail hike. It was a rainy morning and the rangers told us that parts of the trail would be muddy and said more rain was on the way so we best move before heavier weather set in. We drove to the trailhead in pretty heavy rain. Once at the trail head we put on our rain gear. Once rain-proofed, the rain backed off to less than a drizzle. We started down the easy to moderate 2.5 mile loop trail. About 100 yards in we were rewarded with the sight of a lady slipper, the Minnesota State flower. It was, according to the rangers, too early for them so we were very fortunate to see one in full flower. The trail through the woods was really nice. Everything was so lush from recent rains. The only down side was the mosquitoes. We were the only people on the trail and they were really hungry. We sprayed for mosquitoes several times during the hike and debated putting on our head nets. We spotted a deer near the trail. We weren't sure who was more surprised, her or us. Frozen in fear or just ready for her close-up, she allowed us time to get a couple good photos. At the end of the trail we shed our rain gear, got in the car and the rain began again in earnest. It really was our lucky day.
There are no restrooms at the trailhead so plan accordingly while at the visitor center.
Even with the mosquitoes, the muddy sections and the rain, this was a nice hike and we can easily recommend it.

We did this hike in the AM before attempting to catch our boat to Kettle Falls (which was cancelled due to wind/storms). Overall - it was just an average hike. Little to no elevation gain. A number wet areas to navigate around. Lots of mushrooms. If you only have an hour or two - I would suggest hiking around the campground at Woodenfrog State Forest Campground a few miles down the road...we liked the hike there better (about the same length).

If you need to eliminate one hike on your trip to Voyageurs, this is the one. It's a nice walk in the woods, but at best you have one limited lake view.

We just had to get out and hike. Unfortunately, this park really doesn't offer much in hikes. It's best seen from a boat, canoe or kayak. We did see a beaver lodge and experienced the boreal forest.

This generally-easy hike is tucked back off of the one of the main roads in Voyageur's NP near Kabetogama. We brought our two younger children (6 and 2). Our 6 year old managed to hike the 2.5 mile loop just fine (although she was anxious to get to the end with about 1/4 mile left). There's not much of an incline; however, there are rocks and roots sticking out of the trail that you should be aware of when there isn't snow. There is an additional 1 mile trail for cross country skiing in the winter. We didn't see anyone else there (on a Monday afternoon), the bugs weren't too bad, and the silence was certainly enjoyable. Our 6 year old found a slug and some birch bark that had fallen off of a tree, which she was excited about finding. Our 2 year old was in a backpack and ended up falling asleep. There aren't any neat outlooks, but it's a nice, secluded, quiet, short inland hike.

This trail is a nice trail through the woods. The path was marked pretty well, and it was a nice easy work out.

We came here form Kabetogama Visitor Center and it is a short drive away. We started the trail but after half a mile it just got way too muddy, and our hiking boots were not enough. We came early in the morning so maybe later on things have dried up a bit. We came in early July.
