You'll pass by the Painted Canyon visitor center and overlook if visiting the S. Unit. It's an amazing view. You'd be crazy not to stop here if driving by.

The view from the overlook is spectacular, so if you feel that you aren't in great shape for hiking, spend more time just enjoying the view from the top. The hike down the path starts at the other end of the parking area -- west end, I think -- from the visitor's center. If you take the hike, it is... More

This is a majestic overlook of the rugged beauty of western North Dakota. Taking the walk down the trail into the canyon requires some stamina, but take it easy, bring some water and enjoy! See the richness of the colors, smell the scents of the canyons vegetation, listen to the sounds of the insects and birds, feel the rocks and... More

This is truly just an overlook - stop by for a quick look if you don't have time to drive into Theodore Roosevelt.

The colors of the granite as the sun and shadows play provides an extraordinary experience. The site is quiet and tranquil and rare.

I am not sure if it is always windy there or just the day we visited. The scenery was amazing. Technically the area is part of TRNP but it is also a roadside pull off slash rest area. Has restrooms and a welcome travel center. Worth a couple three minutes of your time. Take the hike if you dare.

We took a road trip with the kids (7&10) over the weekend and we all really enjoyed this stop!! Painted Canyon offers an amazing view/walkout, hiking/walking trails, plaques with historical/geographical information, restrooms, and an air conditioned gift shop with a great view for those who don't enjoy the heat! There are also buffalo that roam freely within the park! We... More
