My son and I began our hike from the Meadow Spring parking area. The trailhead is across Skyline Drive from the parking area which is at milepost 33.5. The first .6 of a mile is a moderate ascent to the Appalachian Trail. Along the way...More

The main road that goes through Shenandoah National park provides great opportunities for incredible views of the mountain range. I highly recommend that you take the drive!

This is a great trail for a day hike. A few tips: Unless things have changed recently, you can park at the trailhead without a park permit. To do so, you pass under the Skyline Drive bridge on US 211 (coming from Washington) and turn...More

The uphill grade is rewarded with a scenic view at Mary's Rock. Be sure to have enough water. Returning downhill is quicker but requires careful footing.

This is a great hike up to the summit, but it is a bit of a challenge. The path is quite rocky and you need to take care not to slip, especially as you come back down. I understand there is another route that is...More

This is a nice class 1 trail (easy). Ample parking at trailhead and a fairly busy route. No water available at any point except trailhead. This route is an out and back that can be extended easily by turning off onto the Appalachian Trail. No...More

Okay, this trail isn’t for just anyone. It’s a steep hike up that gives you no break. We would ask hikers coming down, “how much further?”. No matter where in the hike we were we kept hearing “about an hour”. But when you make it...More

We wanted to make a day of it and weren’t sure of our capabilities. Instead of the most direct route to Mary’s trail, we parked near jewel where there was an actual parking lot. Made our way about 50 yd north into the AT entrance....More

This trail is moderate to strenous and straight up.  The trail itself is very nice and shaded.  There are some nice views along the way and the summit is cool look out. It is a rocky trail so your feet might hurt some.

There is plenty of parking at jewel and we had no worries leaving our vehicle there for a few hours as we hiked the long route to Mary’s rock! We took the AT to Mary’s rock trail which was a little over 3 miles to the rock... More

Not at all. There are some nice rock outcroppings that you can climb for about 3-4 meters of more altitude if you do want to have a little fun, but you’ll just come back down at the same location unless you intend to go off... More
