A Bit Strenuous But a Nice Quiet Hike
Oct 2021 • Couples
This is a definitely a moderate/strenuous hike. The trail is clearly marked. It’s very rocky in spots and there are steps to climb. According to my Apple Watch this is closer to a 2 mile hike each way. The lake at the top is just ok. Do not go on this hike for the lake. Do go on this hike for a peaceful, not crowded hike with sweeping views. Very primitive toilet facility near the top. Fortunately the trip down is much easier. We took our time stopped at lot on the way up.

Are you able to ascend in the thin air?
Sep 2021 • Family
Please note that the 3 rating is to let others know that this is definitely a MODERATE hike. It is not EASY! as it was listed in a few places. It’s beautiful but takes about an hour up and if you are not used to the thin air, it may be hard for some. Of course, you can stop where ever you’d like and come back down. But just know you may not get to see the lake. The path is in good shape and it’s beautiful.

WOW, incredible views!

Even the drive to Estes Park to get to Lumpy Ridge Trailhead from Loveland was beautiful. The hike was hard but so worth it, beautiful views of Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park and Gem Lake. The chipmunks were so friendly begging for treats along the trail and at Gem Lake.

Great Views
Jun 2021
My wife and I hiked the Gem Lake Trail and really enjoyed it. I would say this is a moderate to strenuous hike as there is about 1000 feet of elevation gain. There are great views along the way of the valley and Estes Park. The trail was busy with groups and families which was nice to see after COVID. There are also lots of cool rock formations along the way. The lake is small but very beautiful. We brought lunch and enjoyed our lunch at the lake (lots of aggressive chipmunks who appear to be well fed!) The trailhead is outside of the typical park entrances so we were not asked for a timed entry pass or vehicle pass (we had a 7 day vehicle pass that we displayed on the dash). May be a good choice if you don't have timed entry passes. This was a very nice hike. I would highly recommend it!

Hiking to Gem lake
Jun 2021 • Family
Easy to reach from Estes great morning hike. If you were making multiple hikes in to Rocky Mountain national forest it’s a no-brainer to include this one.

Well worth the experience.

Moderate to difficult hike but well worth the experience. Gem Lake was beautiful! Novice or older individuals might consider spikes or trekking poles if physically needed on icy days. Hiking boots with decent tread are SAFER for walking this sometimes slippery trail (depending on weather). Stop for air often and enjoy the view. It’s a beautiful hike.

Disappointing - expected a lake not a pond
May 2021 • Family
This is a lot of work for little reward. It's quite a strenuous hike, and yes the scenery on the way is gorgeous, but you eventually end at a small pond and then descend back (no loop). Would not recommend.

One of our favorite hikes that isn't too difficult in the Rocky Mountain National Park! The Gem Lake trail has some awesome views of the Estes Valley from above.

Gem Lake is a bit of an overstatement
Sep 2020
Very nice 3.8 mile hike. The aspen were starting to change color and the trail is wonderfully maintained and without litter. Enjoyed seeing Paul Bunyan's boot. The rock formations behind Gem Puddle are actually more striking than the little lake itself.

Delightful hike that worked up a little sweat and our appetites.

Make sure to get your RMNP reservation for timed entry early as they do sell out.

Gem Lake during the Winter? No thanks!
Nov 2019
The Rocky Mountain National Park is a beautiful place to visit.

There were mountains and snow everywhere. It was absolutely breathtaking.

Gem Lake, on the other hand, was alright in late November.

During our climb up to Gem Lake, it was difficult, cold, and hilarious, to say the least, because the hike took a big toll on one of my friends.

It took us hours to reach the top, but when we finally made it to Gem Lake, it was a lake not worth seeing because it was frozen at the time. That was disappointing, but we made is safely.

Overall, I am sure Gem Lake is beautiful during other seasons that are not winter. Beautiful scenery and lake, if so.

Would I visit Gem Lake again? Maybe not because there are other trails I would like to try.

*If you are looking to hike different places, I would recommend getting a pass called "America The Beautiful Passes."
