As a native of the region, I grew up on Crystal Mountain. Started skiing there when I was three and was a part-time instructor by the time I was fifteen. By now I've skied all over the US, Europe, and South America. For an expert skier Crystal is among the very best.

The"tourist reviews" miss a lot. A "one or two-week" try can give you anything for a result. They tend to mention "ice" where low altitude Crystal is more known for slush. Exceptionally, it even RAINS in mid-winter. The "beginners beware" comment is wholly valid, however. If you are a beginner there are lots of better places in Washington to ski. The beginner slopes are fairly limited, although they ARE groomed.

Snowpack is usually heavy so for those who like it steep and deep or mega bumped you'll have a good chance of finding paradise. Tree skiing galore. Another correct observation from a tourist about the difficulty ratings: A "black diamond" at Crystal will rate as a double black pretty much anywhere else.

I live in France now and only went back to visit friends.

The gondola ride to the top of this mountain was amazing. When we got to the top and saw Mt Rainier it was just the most incredible sight. The clouds made the sight so different everytime they moved just a little. I googled tons of "what to do" on a day trip and this never came up anywhere. What a shame this is not advertised more as it was one of our best days in the Pacific Northwest. It is pricey but the view is just to die for. This trip was August 31st and it was chilly so a jacket is much needed. Don't miss this incredible trip! If you don't do anything else, do this!

We took the gondola lift to the top to see Mt. Rainier. It was well organized from the home station to the top. Things were pricey, but well worth it for that million dollar view!!

Crystal Mountain is probably fantastic for experienced skiers, but it was my first day. The magic carpet was a good idea, but there was a downhill slope to the beginning of the magic carpet, which is really hard if it is your first hour skiing! You have to snowplow down to the magic carpet, then quickly straighten your skis at just the right moment so they will fit on the narrow magic carpet. If you are too slow to straighten your skis, one ski will get caught off the magic carpet and you will fall. If you are too quick to straighten your skis, you will go onto the carpet too fast, and you will fall. After a few tries I just took off my skis and walked up, bypassing the magic carpet.

Once you get onto the beginner slope, it was very nice. The snow is contoured, not just flat, and I think that was helpful.

My lift ticket was $59 even though all I wanted to do on my first day was the magic carpet. At other resorts you can buy a "magic carpet only" ticket for something like $15. So Crystal is an expensive first day.

I didn't advance to the point of using the Discover lift, but others told me that the hill is quite steep at the beginning of that run, so not super friendly for beginners either.

Having listed my complaints, let me also say that the staff were very nice. We went on a Monday, so it wasn't too crowded, and the staff were careful to measure me for the right size boots, skis, and poles.

We rode the gondola to the summit, and that was fun even though it was too cloudy to get good views. The restaurant at the top was pricey but the food was very good.

In summary, this is probably a fantastic ski resort if you have at least a couple days of ski experience, but not ideal if it's your first day.

When ski season is over, treat yourself to a gondola ride to the summit of Crystal Mountain. At approx 7000 feet, it is nearly half the height of Mount Rainier which appears so close. On a very clear day, you can see beyond Rainier to other mountains in the range ... Mnt St Helen's !
The summit has a nice restaurant with outdoor tables and when the weather cooperates, appetizers, drinks and a close-up view of a volcano makes for a memorable day. Highly recommend this experience !

I skied here in December 2019. The only true beginner runs were almost completely flat. The green runs off the first lift up were lots of moguls, steep and icy. I have skied Colorado, Utah, and Banff and have never encountered a resort where the green runs were like this. Also, not being groomed made for large mounds of snow and if you hot one of those, your skis pop off. I did not enjoy the skiing here at all. Waste of time and money, especially for the cost of a lift ticket.
The views however, they were completely amazing! The gondola ride to the top was short and the views were totally worth it. The top is not very large and can be crowded with selfie-takers. There are a few deck chairs to sit and enjoy the view. Also some local birds will eat out of your hand, but be prepared to bring food because the only food at the top is the high price restaurant, no vending machines or drinks either. There is a restroom at the top, thank goodness.
If you're an advanced skier you will probably love the skiing here. However, beginners beware!

We were visiting Seattle and wanted to get closer to Mt. Rainier. The gondola ride up the Crystal Mountain was the perfect view. It was a beautiful sunny day. We sat on the outdoor terrace and had a great lunch staring at Mt Rainier. The site and colors were just amazing. The little chipmunks or ground squirrels were so tame, they almost hopped in my husbands backpack. Don't worry they didn't! As you are driving to the park and if you have limited time, this visit is a very good option vs. going into the Park

Great place to visit in the summer and take in the amazing view of Mt. Rainier and the Cascade Range up at the top. Lots of hiking trails, a gift store, games to play like corn hole, a snack bar, and the gondola.

Note . . .
There is a ranger station/information center just before the turn to Crystal Mountain. Here we got a coupon for free ice cream, 25 % off gifts at the gift shop, and 50% off an appetizer at the Summit House restaurant.

You can easily take the Gondola ride or do the trek.
The rides are continuous so you don’t have to wait for long.
You go on the top and just enjoy the view with your lunch or picnic.
It is breathtaking sight at the top!
