My first climbing experience was in Joshua Tree "National Monument" with Bob Gaines of Vertical Adventure in 1988. I had the chance to return to Joshua Tree "National Park" with my daughter this year, and was hoping to climb with Bob again. Unfortunately, he was unavailable on our climbing date, so he paired us with Jarad. I was not at all disappointed with Jarad as a guide. He was excellent at getting us "on the rock" with minimal up-front "class-room" type instruction, yet covered all the bases really well. He was extremely easy-going, courteous, kind, and helpful, and came across as very sincere. As an extra bonus, he took some really cool photos of us, and made an excellent recommendation for a backpacking destination. I would be happy to climb with Jarad again! Be aware that the weather in Joshua Tree is very variable, so be sure to plan a trip at at a time when it is likely to be within your tolerances.

My buddy and I booked a two day guided session in Joshua tree last month to learn how to trad climb and it was an absolute blast! We’ve climbed outdoors but this was our first time climbing trad, and we wanted to learn how to place gear from an expert. Jared was our guide for the trip and he was amazing. Jared is a wealth of knowledge and broke things down in a way that made things easily digestible. He was able to ascertain our skill level and competence right off the bat and kept us challenged in a way that that enabled to build a solid understanding of the fundamentals while learning things we never thought we’d get a chance to try out on our first trip.

Book Jared! He’s the best.

I had a great experience climbing with and learning from Chris last week. Chris was so personable, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. He was adept at making me feel confident in skills I had and helping me gain skills that I wanted to develop. Chris was also great at assessing where I was at and making suggestions for what would be most helpful. I left not only with tips and tricks for gear, but with a renewed confidence that I needed to progress in my climbing. I feel ready to move forward now instead of stifled by fears and insecurities that were plaguing me.

Wow! What a great experience! Our Vertical Adventures rock climbing guide, Tony Sartin, was outstanding! Tony was totally dialed and has a wealth of experience which he shared with us. Beyond that, his enthusiastic, clear, and encouraging teaching style delivered a tremendous learning experience— all while having a total blast! My partner, a new trad leader, reflected on how much she learned about placing pro, managing the rope while leading, building anchors, and bringing up a second. Thank you Tony and thank you Vertical Adventures—we will be back!!!

The class with Chris was great! I found it very informative, and I enjoyed hearing his pro-tips and suggestions for me after I mentioned my intention to pursue the SPI course next year. We were pretty lucky to have only two folks in our class, which led to more one-on-one time and allowed us to move faster. Day two was great setting anchors and climbing off them, definitely a boost in confidence and good anchor building "mileage."

I joined several members of my Search & Rescue unit in a training with Vertical Adventures, focused on basic repelling, rock traversing, and belaying skills for Class 3 and Class 4 terrain searches. Jarad, our AMGA-certified instructor, was a best-in-class example of what Vertical Adventures has to offer customers. He was thorough, calm and and extremely positives as he took our team through a comprehensive and focused two day training block. Thank you, Vertical Adventures!

While Joshua Tree is an amazingly awesome place on its own, having the opportunity to climb some of its majesty with a knowledgeable and highly skilled guide makes it even better. I have climbed 4 times with Vertical Adventures run by Bob Gaines (apparently one of the top writers of climbing guides for Joshua Tree), and none of them have disappointed. The past two times, we have been paired up with Chris, who was patient, helpful and really great with both kids and adults. My kids loved climbing with Chris, and he guided us through the Chasm of Doom adventure (which could have been the highlight for my kids). I can't recommend Chris (as a guide) and Vertical Adventures (the first and oldest licensed/insured climbing outfit in Joshua Tree) enough. Well worth it.

What an amazing time we had with Jarad leading a four day rock climbing course with Vertical Adventures in March. I visited Joshua Tree National Park with my young adult daughter, both of us with limited outdoor climbing experience. Each day Jarad planned an amazing day with multiple varied climbs demonstrating different techniques and skills required to advance our knowledge in a fun and relaxed manner. We felt safe together as a team, and he showed us how make progress when we were “stuck”. Jarad made each day super fun by picking perfect climbs tailored to the groups level and made the best of windy weather. Thank you to Jarad Stiles and Bob Gaines for arranging a memorable course and we look forward to returning. I highly recommend Vertical Adventures.

Climbed with Vertical Adventures this weekend - it was awesome!!!

Our guide Chris was knowledgable, personable, and helped us all feel very safe on the rock, but also encouraged us on increasingly challenging climbs. He was an excellent teacher and gave technique advice throughout the day. By the end of the day we had all improved a lot and were way more confident.

Bob and the office staff were clear communicators, always available, and a total class act.

Can't wait to climb with these guys again!
