Interesting trail, but only the first half is accessible without a 4-wheel drive vehicle..... and even if you are equipped and able to attempt the 2nd half, you'd have to be comfortable with risking some damage to the car.

The guideed trail (don't forget to get the pamphlet) is interesting in giving you some of the park's geological history. We didn;t make it past marker 9 as our vehicle wasn't suitable. Just be aware that 4WD is highly recommended past marker 6 when the road descends. I could barely make it back up in a Jeep (2WD only, would... More

Although I wouldn't take my wife's sedan on the Geology Road, it could probably make it.... at least to the 9 marker. Pick up a map at the beginning so you know what you're looking at. This was a neat drive as the geology along the way is so interesting. There are a few rough spots after the 9 marker.... More

This is about 2 hours long and forms a loop so you end up back where you started. It is relatively untraveled so you can get away from the crowds at the other attractions. There are identified points of interest so you are recommended to get a copy of the trail map from the visitor centre. It is recommended to... More

We missed the geology tour part - I guess we weren't looking hard enough for the 16 markers - but the fun on Berdoo Canyon more than made up for it. As another reviewer wrote, there were a few areas we had to get out and look at the terrain/rocks to figure out the best approach. If you're wanting a... More

We took Geology road to Berdoo canyon road down to Dillon Rd. This was a great road to take. Geology road says 4x4 needed but it is really quite tame. We decided to continue on down Berdoo Canyon. This road starts out easy, but as you continue down the canyon it get more exciting. The last 5 miles of the... More

The Geology Trail is worth a couple of hours of your Joshua Tree exploration time. Be sure to print out the tour guide for the Geology Trail Tour that is available on line, as the box at the trailhead is often empty of flyers. The road is well maintained. We have AWD and perfectly comfortable on the road. To our... More

We've been to Joshua Tree National Park dozens of times (maybe 50) and it never disappoints. Each trip is both familiar but distinct. This time we went backcountry camping off Geology Tour Road. There are two backcountry boards and we struck out from the 2nd one. It was a great backpacking hike and we found a terrific campsite about 2... More

We rented a Jeep and are really glad we did because this drive was one of our favorite parts of the park. Away from the buses and noisey kids you could get a real feeling for the landscape.

The first part of the dirt road is accessible by regular cars, but after a while the road gets rough and only 4WD vehicles can continue. It's a nice trail, easy most of the way until we started through one area where I was scraping my skid plates a little bit. My friend who has a lifted Jeep with 35"... More
