I highly recommend going up to the top, save your money and drive yourself. You can go with an excursion, but you are limited. watch out for the bicycling.. kinda dangerous with all the curves and turns.

We bought a self guided tour on the iTunes Store and visited Haleakala Crater. The drive was very scenic and safe. The views of Maui were tremendous. We took several of the marked trails and visited the visitor centers. We kept on going and had...More

Remember to pack layers -we brought one set of clothes just for this activity. Drink lots of water and be wary of altitude sickness if you plan to hike. Allow at least 3 hours for the drive from west Maui (even if your gps says...More

This tour is gorgeous. All the views are amazing and our tour guide, Eddie, was so knowledgeable about everything in the area. I recommend everyone sees the crater. Unlike anything else we have seen at other national parks!

We made the drive up to the summit for a beautiful sunset. It was so worth the long and winding road up to the summit area. We got there about 45minutes before the sun was to set at 7:10PM. There is not much parking at...More

Would recommend making the long ride up early in the morning to view the sunrise. Try to get there as early as possible, as it gets busy very fast and they will close the upper viewing point and you will have to stay lower. I...More

We went up on a rather windy and cloudy day. The wind was blowing over 40 mph. Through the clouds we got to see the tops of the volcanoes on the big island. If you're in good shape, take a hike down into the crater....More

You can totally take the Yaris up. It's a paved road! It's really well kept. We took a Nissan Altima up.

Bad idea due to altitude if you plan on heading into the crater at all. If you do go, be sure to pack lots of water to drink. You can explore the summit areas at 10k feet up looking all around. As the prior answer indicated... More
