This was the second hike me and my girlfriend did last year. Was a great drive up the mountain, topped off with this hike awesome view when you reach the top of the Dome! I would recommend this hike at the end of October when...More

We wanted to go early to miss crowds but there was thick cloud this morning. We walked about halfway from the parking lot to the dome and decided not to go the rest of the way as there was no visibility (and it is a...More

IT's COLD and WINDY AT 6,644 FT! It's about 20 degrees colder than the temp at the bottom of the mountains. We were very under dressed and it could have made for a miserable time, thankfully we toughed it out and it was worth it....More

Learn how the Smokies got the name. Learn how Clingman's dome got the name. Take the time to absorb the cool air that gently cools you after the hike up to the dome. Carry a small tote with bottled water, and rest along the hike...More

We ventured to the top on the 7th late in the evening after a light rain. I was one that had flip flops on as I fell in the creek at Cades Cove trekking earlier in the day and flip flops were the only dry...More

This is a popular destination in the park. Come early if you are here on the weekend especially. The later in the morning it gets the harder it can be to find a parking spot. This has been a Bucket List kind of experience for...More

This is a must-see in the park. We walked the .5 mile paved trail to the top and it is noteworthy that this is quite steep. We saw several elderly visitors and not in the best shape visitors who were having a challenging time on...More

The walk is on wide clean asphalt blacktop. It is steep and the wind and temperature change is noticeable. There are placards on the top showing the terrain and mountain locations so that you don't have to guess at the locations as you view.

The day I hiked up 2/3 of the view was obstructed by clouds, but still worth the climb. And when I say climb, it is fairly steep, especially in the beginning. It is paved and doable. I would climb it again.

Clingmans Dome is about a 45 minute drive from Gatlinburg. Plan on a very early start to find parking. Try to be there by 9 AM. The hike up to the observation tower will take about an hour. It is a steep hike and the air... More

Clingmans Dome is the name of the mountain. The road to the Clingmans Dome parking area is a bit curvy and there are some drop offs. I would think your husband's problem would be that road more than the .5 mile paved hike... More
