Excellent experience with Traverse Alaska. We made reservations for a full day of guided hiking for a party of 4 (two adults and two kids). The hike was just right for our family. We all enjoyed learning to walk on the tundra and eating wild blueberries! Our guide, Jake, brought along plant identification cards that he handed out to our children so they could learn to recognize local plants while we were hiking. We did not encounter any bears (thankfully), but we did see a moose at a safe distance. The views were great! Jake even loaned us an extra pair of socks when one person's boots turned out to be less-than-waterproof.

Our trip to Alaska was planned for summer 2020...then the pandemic caused cancellation in 2020 and again in 2021. We finally got to go in July 2022 with a 4-day land excursion followed by the Alaska cruise from Seward to Vancouver, BC. We took the dome train down from Fairbanks to Denali National Park where we stayed for two days and planned a full-day outing with Mollie from Traverse Alaska for light hiking and photography. Having not used my Canon 6D in a few years, I was a bit rusty. Mollie patiently provided an ongoing refresher course and taught me some new skills during our outing. Mollie drove us in her very comfortable, large, late-model SUV to various vantage points for sprawling landscape photographs. She also had a tripod with her that she let me use. Right off the bat, we got lucky (Mollie knew where to stop) and saw a moose and her calf. Mollie is very nice to spend the day with and has about 12 years in the Alaska tour guide business. We enjoyed our time immensely with her and are very glad we hired her as our Alaska guide. Highly recommend Mollie to anyone who wants to hire a very qualified guide/photographer!

We booked a hiking day with Traverse Alaska and had an absolutely fabulous day with Joe, our guide. We got to see amazing country we NEVER would have without his guidance, as well as getting tons of information about the plants and animals and geography along the way. Joe very carefully read our interests and abilities and crafted an experience we will remember forever. The trailside conversations with Joe will be with us for a long time: how valuable time "playing outside" is, how important being still and in the wild is (especially to recognize that the wild is always out there, we just need to be present enough to see it), what winter might feel like in the interior of Alaska, how time and light change at a pace of 7 minutes/day, just lots of GREAT food for thought.
We had a chance to experience the tundra, away from the Denali crowds, in a way that we never expected we could.
We would not hesitate to book Traverse Alaska again and consider them for a bigger, and longer trip.

We spent four days with Traverse Alaska staying at Tongling Lodge, just outside Denali National Park. I cannot give a better report card to Traverse Alaska and our guide Freddie Hougland. Freddie took us for several hikes on the Tundra, in the woods and along Riley Creek. He is personable with a keen sense of humor and he is very knowledgeable in the geology of the region as well as its fauna. He has hiked and camped extensively in the area for many years and, yet, he speaks about how much more there is to see and experience there. You could not get a better guide, leader or friend than Freddie. We also need to mention Jim and Buckwheat! Freddie took us to Jim’s river rafting office cabin where we were equipped and set up for an intermediate rapids rafting down the Nenana River. Buckwheat piloted us in an unforgettable fashion. Great sense of humor matched only by his superb oarsmanship and safe navigation. Buckwheat showed us a River and nature that remains untamed over all the years of its existence and that is as remarkable now as it is beautiful. Last of all but not least, we stayed at Tongling Lodge and, although not part of Traverse Alaska, it is one big family. We cannot say enough good things about Tongling Lodge, it’s owner Donna, it’s chef Elena, it’s warm welcoming staff and its fantastic dogs show and performance under Donna’s training and leadership. Having travelled to 70 countries in this world and 45 states, our days with Freddie, our rafting trip with Buckwheat and our stay at Tongling Lodge stand out and will remain in our memory and stories for a long time.

My husband and I had the best time with our guide. He was available to us for 3 1/2 full days. His knowledge of Alaska, including the history, the geology, the trees, berries, plants, flowers, animals, and the best "off the beaten path places to visit" is mind-boggling. He helped arrange dinners for us at places the locals like and we avoided all tourist traps. He was interested in what we wanted to do and catered everything to our level of ability to hike, climb, raft, canoeing, etc. He gave us the time to soak in the environment and never rushed us to move on to the "next thing". He encouraged us to appreciate and take in the awesome beauty of Alaska. If I could give Traverse Alaska 25 Stars (or higher), I would. If you are planning to visit Alaska, I strongly encourage you to use Traverse Alaska for one of the best experiences of your life. I know that some people may only want a half-day trip, but I strongly recommend at least one full day trip with them as you will see Alaska like no one else can show it to you. We had a picnic lunch on an Esker, talked a little, and then listened to the silence of being away from other people, traffic, etc. We heard the birds, the red squirrels, the wind, and soaked in nature. I could go on and on about how wonderful Traverse Alaska is, but I will stop for now. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Our private, local guide was easy-going, very knowledgeable about the Denali area and a great asset for our family. He listened to our preferences and then chose hiking trails that matched our abilities & interests. Their rafting trip was far superior to their competitors. Prompt. Courteous. Professional. My entire family highly recommends Traverse Alaska.

I was a bit nervous, not knowing in advance what we would do for the day, but I shouldn’t have worried. Our guide, Freddie, was wonderful and was amazing with our kids (ages 10 and 7) (he indulged their incessant chattering with such kindness). We hiked in the tundra, saw amazing views, and learned so much. He was ready with activities to engage our kids and did not push beyond their limits/attention span. It probably competes for Freddie’s lowest mileage day, but it was perfect for us. We would highly recommend!

My wife and I had an excellent experience with Traverse Alaska. Our guide, Kierre, was knowledgable of the terrain and shared fun facts that made the backcountry so interesting.

We felt this intro to backcountry hiking was a perfect start to our 3 week trip in Alaska because it gave us the confidence to hike and camp in the not-so-frontcountry parts of the Denali wilderness and the Kenai peninsula.

Kierre also shared tons of amazing resources that helped us plan other parts of our trip. She even took pictures and shared them with us!

We had an awesome time in Alaska due in large part to our guides, Patrice and Justin. Patrice took us on a half day hike to a pristine lake. She was very safety conscious and took time initially to go over safety protocols for bear and moose encounters. She had bear spray, so we felt very safe. Along the hike she pointed out various berries and flowers and the importance of these plants to humans and animals. She even identified different types of animal scat along the way so we knew what animals had been nearby and what they were eating. Justin was our driver for 2 legs of our journey and he found great local spots for a drink and bite of food. He told us about mountain climbing, the geology of Alaska, and life as a local. Excellent experience. Thank you.

This father’s goal was to create an unforgettable, once in lifetime trip with my two teenage boys and experience as much as Alaska as possible within 12 days. This goal was not only accomplished but far exceeded thanks to the experience and thoughtful guidance of the Traverse Alaska team.

Traverse Alaska was gracious with their time throughout the planning phase of the trip. Their guidance and unique ability to listen to what I was trying to accomplish helped shape this trip of a lifetime. How we covered all the activities and geography we did in only 12 days still amazes us. If you truly want to experience Alaska like no one else, look no further than the Traverse Alaska team!
