This 1920s vacation home in the desert was built by insurance magnate...

This 1920s vacation home in the desert was built by insurance magnate Albert Johnson. However, at the time most people believed it belonged to Death Valley Scotty, who claimed to have a secret gold mine in the tunnels beneath it. 99% of the contents are original from when the Johnssons vacationed there in the 1920s and 1930s.

You can walk the grounds or read the exhibits in the visitor center for free. However, access to the House, Underground, or Lower Vine Ranch are by guided tour only. You can reserve tickets before 9pm the previous day, or tickets are usually available to customers upon arrival.

House Tours last one hour and are offered every day. Summer hours are very limited (10:00, 12:00 and 2:00 only). Tours are offered more frequently in cooler, busier months. Tours cost $15/person, or $7.50/child 6-15, person with an Interagency Senior Pass or Interagency Access Pass.

Underground Tours are usually only offered a few times per day from November through April. Tickets cost $15/person, or there is a combination price of $25/person for the House Tour and Underground Tour.

The 2-mile, 2 1/2 hour hiking tour to Lower Vine Ranch is only offered on select dates, usually from January through March. The cost is $20/person. Reservations are strongly recommended.

It was cool until they started busing in Korean tourists. Now it has lost its charm of the old west.

Although its name, It's not a castle, but a very beautiful mansion in the desert. The architecture is typical of mansions of that time, making it seems like you are in Mexico

Please note that Grapevine and Scotty's Castle have been heavily damaged by flooding and the authorities are working diligently to repair the damage and restore this beautiful landmark! It is not open and may be closed for the next 2 years. So I have revised my earlier review. With that warning in mind, please read on: This place was established... More

The huge castle sits right at the intersection of the only two main roads inside the park. According to the introduction, the castle has a very interesting history including its name. One can't believe that there would be such a grand-looking building at a desert like the Death Valley.

The history of this place is as interesting as its architecture. It's amazing to be cool in the house when the outside temp exceeds 100 degree. It is certainly a worthwhile stop on the long drive from Vegas to Reno.

This absolutely gorgeous place to see is closed now due to severe rain a year ago. When we were there we really enjoyed it there. It's beautiful. We drove in from near Beatty, NV - that road I understand right now is closed. Check to see if it is open before you head out to see it. It's a must... More

Scotty's Castle, and the road leading up to it, is currently closed because of storm damage to the road and building. You can however still access the road to Ubehebe Crater which is worth the trip to see. We have visited Scotty's Castle in prior trips to Death Valley and it is beautiful. Hopefully the repairs will be done soon.... More

A View From the Outside Only because this is closed for indefinite period. Sad because it looks so beautiful and inviting from the outside. Located just before turning to Ubehebe and Racetrack Road, far from the main area.

Scotty´s Castle is a historic ranch built by a Chicago millionaire in the 1920/30s It is a long drive from the main road but worth the visit. I recommend the guided tour, the guides know the place and many funny stories from the past. The park website had some confusing information about the opening hours. In late 2015 the place... More
