Rattlesnake Springs is a few miles south of the road entrance to Carlsbad Caverns. It is truly an oasis in the desert. A great variety of wildlife and plant life thrive in the abundant waters of Rattlesnake Springs.

As soon as we made the final turn into Rattlesnake Springs we saw a flock of turkeys and a couple mule deer. The springs are a little anticlimactic, but the nearby picnic area was a great place for us to relax and spend some time...More

We went to Rattlesnake Springs in the hopes of seeing some wildlife since it is the only water around for miles. We did see a flock of turkeys, a few mule deer, and a number of vocal frogs, but not much else. The place was...More

We stopped here on our way out of Carlsbad after touring the cave. We wanted a picnic area that wasn't crowded like the main visitor center and we wanted shade. This place was great! There were tons of picnic tables under shady trees (cottonwoods?) and...More

I wish I had gotten there early in the day. Even so, there were birds galore. I've never seen so many Vermillion Flycatchers in one small area!

We spent one afternoon and one morning here in early February. Although "good" birds were scarce due to time of year, it's obvious that this place has fantastic potential during a more birdy time of year. Be sure to bird all the way back to...More

This is a lovely picnic area with a host of interesting birds. We saw painted buntings, vermilion flycatchers, tanagers, quail, and wild turkeys. We also saw javelinas, and jackrabbits on the road in. We were there in the early morning. It's worth walking down the...More
